Re Write: Jaz and Elite Net Prophets Present Da True Defintion of Raw-R.I.P. DJ Przm

I was very fortunate to receive an e-mail from one of Przm's best friends, longtime music partner and former roommate...

DJ Pos2 (Spitball, Fonosluts) and he has helped me with so much information that I thought it was only right to make the correct changes...because well the Internet is forever and a teaching tool (for the most part) and it's important.

Christopher Sheffield a.k.a DJ Przm aka Mr Nervous sadly passed away in June, 2007 of Heart complications from a longtime condition he had suffered from, DJ Pos2 told me that Chris wasn't even supposed to live past Three years of age but he made it to 36 and that was an incredible feat in itself.

An incredible feat was exactly what Chris was, a well loved DJ especially at Bernies which is a Columbus Hip Hop icon.

DJ Przm was born in Detroit but moved to Columbus when he was young and was a unique, raw and ill beatmaker, MC, contributor and from all of the forums I have read, a much loved individual that looked out for everyone and will be very missed like another Columbus legend that passed in 2006, Daymon Dodson a.k.a. So What?

http://stilllistentogangstamusic.blogspot.com/2006/11/daymon-dodson.html

The Polo rocking Przm's production was just some of the illest hardcore dirty funk you would ever hear, his hard drums were usually laced with eerie samples and deep, muddy basslines that would make speakers tremble, but the talent he would use to catch wreck (I'm bring that back ha ha) over his beats were just as dope as he was.

From what DJ Pos2, Elite_Net_Prophets and Funky D told me

DJ Przm released 5 CD's in the span of a year in a few months and those CD's were

The Letter People (
Przm, Metro, and Flip Da Urban Kiwi) *

3MS (Three Member Structure) (Przm, Feast/Dro & Eclypse)-Sick, Senile, Crazy & Dead Fan Humor

Spitball*-The Last Straw

Spitball was basically everybody in Columbus who was dope. that's how it started out. everybody would come over to przms house and just kick it...then start recording shit to pass time. so it was nothing to come over and see camu, copy, jakki, blueprint, iilogic, and the masses of talented mc's in columbus over there just kicking it. then as everybody did their own thing and we moved away from the campus area, it trickled down to bru lei, eclypse, przm... then me and dj bombay dj'd the shows.

DJ Przm-Presents The Flim Flam

Which was Chris's solo album and during the time he recorded all of these he also laced the beats for Phizz Ed's solo album.

During the years 2001-2007, DJ Przm produced for SA Smash (Metro & Camu Tao), Eddie Meeks, Spitball, Meta4ce Omega,Camu Tao,Illogic, Jakki Da Motamouth,Copywrite and others, Pos2 told me that there were sessions with Jakki & Copywrite known as Foulmouf Dux and that he has some of this material and some of his DJ Przm favourites at his my space page.

http://myspace.com/djpos2music.com

Pos2 also shared the information that established artists were after Przm's beats and that...
i got stories for days about people running up to him begging for beats that are established artist. but with his condition, it just made it difficult for him to be motivated.
The following was sent to me from

Funky D

Hey man, Dope writeup on Przm on your site. Being a Columbus hip-hop head, it's truly amazing to see a tribute from a man in New Zealand! I would like to hear the comp you mention on your site, so if you could send me the link, I'd be much obliged. FYI - So What was not an alias of Przm. So What, aka Daymon Dodson, was another Columbus hip-hop icon who passed away last August. It has been a sad year for Columbus hip-hop. You're not alone - Hiphopsite ran a news story on Przm's death and had a picture of Daymon up until Blueprint wrote them an email to correct them. I wanna say that Phizz Ed is another person too (not an alias), but I'm not sure and I'd have to check with the older types around town for that. Thanks again for your article

Peace brother. PRZM (Chris) was a friend of mine for about the last 7 years. I'd appreciate if you could forward info on how to get the PRZM mixtape. Also, below, I included some words I said about my man in a bulletin on MySpace. Thanx, and stay up.

To those that knew him, PRZM (Fonosluts, 3MS, Spitball) passed away Sunday June 10th, 2007, reportedly of heart complications. I hadn't seen him since Scribble Jam 2005 (along with Daymon, also R.I.P.), I believe, so the news of his passing, and knowing we won't hang out again on this plain hits me rather hard. PRZM was my man; I enjoyed all of his music, both production and vocal, and I thought given the proper outlet that he could have a heightened profile in the music scene.

I first became familiar with him through Kev Beacham's Time Travel show, on which I was co-host, back in 2000-2001. We were checking hard for MHz at the time, and had even took a trip out to Columbus for the Atoms Family/Weightless showcase at Bernie's. Through MHz, particularly Jakki, I was introduced to the music of 3MS, and then to PRZM himself. Dude had a project with Jakki and Copywrite called Foul-Mouthed Ducks that I remember hearing a few tracks from.

It seemed like Columbus had such a strong scene back in the early 00's, one that made me think of what Chicago could be without all the crew divisions. Anyway, I wound up putting Prz, Lozone, and Pos 2 up at my place overnight when Spitball came in for a show at Sub-T in like 2000. It was hilarious because I didn't have a couch at the time, and these cats had to bunk it on the air mattress. We all built a friendship, and I regret not keeping in contact with these dudes like I should have over the last few years.

I knew about PRZM's heart, but he never moaned about it, and it never affected his rhyming or overall music making, as far as I could tell. I hadn't heard anything new from him in a few years, but I do know that he finally had the opportunity to do work on my man Dan's crew LP, Giraffe Nuts. I think I put these two up with each other, so I was really happy to hear about the collabo.

I will be on the hunt for any PRZM joints I don't currently have, and he will be dearly missed. Peace, brother.

This is the letter that Blueprint distributed after Chris's death.

I am writing to inform everyone of the passing of my friend and fellow Columbus musician, DJ Przm. He passed Sunday June 10th in Sacramento, CA. I met Przm in 1999 when we first started putting out greenhouse effect and illogic tapes when he started up a local hip-hop night on sundays in Columbus, OH with his DJ crew the Fonosluts (w/ DJ Pos2 and Lozone). What started out as something small ended up being the longest running and most successful hip-hop night in the history of Columbus hip-hop. Prior to Bernies there were no places to play and bernies gave each of us a chance to play in front of receptive crowds and compete in some of the most fierce open mics I've ever seen. From the MHz (Copywrite, Camu, Jakki, RJD2), to Weightless (myself, greenhouse Effect, and Illogic), to Stronghold, to Phife Dog, to Thirsten Howell, bernies was the only place to be for underground hip-hop in Columbus, and DJ Przm (who started the night w/o even owning any turntables or mixer) was at the forefront of that. He put out a series of records from 1999 to 2002 that although were not nationally distributed and limited in pressing made him and his crew (Spitball,Fonosluts, & 3MS) the most popular in the scene at the time. He was an amazing Dj and was the first Dj I ever took on the road with me in 2002 when i started touring. He, Illogic, and I had so many good times that it's hard to know where to begin, but in terms of rocking shows, since Przm was a Dj, Emcee, producer, and beatboxer of the highest level--he was able to make any show live and able to make the best out of any bad situation. He was the kind of guy who would laugh at me having a meltdown about a bad show and never took things too seriously. Przm was also a killer party DJ, who could kill crowds with anything from booty house to classic hip-hop. He truly was a throwback to the era when emcees did more than just emcee, they practiced and sought to perfect every aspect of the hip-hop. In addition to the production work he did with his Spitball crew, he produced and EP for Illogic (Off the Clock), SA Smash ("Smash TV"), Copywrite, Supastition, and the most recognizable beat of his career, "Hold The Floor" for Camu Tao (def jux). DJ Przm single-handedly defined the grimey, lo-fi sound of Columbus hip-hop. Throughout his life, Przm had health issues surrounding his heart, and had moved to the west coast over a year ago in hopes to speed up the process of getting a heart transplant. Please spread the word to all that knew of DJ Przm and his work. He will be sorely missed.

Please check this link from Antonio's blog, it's a very dope interview with DJ Przm from 2006

Jaz's June Bug Out Fat Mixtape...

NB: I sent out a mass e-mail of links, please let me know if you didn't get one

What's good people (from everywhere gathering around....)

First of all my utmost gratitude to all of you ill kids that have been asking for and giving very positive feedback on the last fat mixtape...from the UK to France, to the US to Germany...to all over... and to my man Triple D and Hooker 1 for some much appreciated hook ups.

The DJ Mark The 45 King piece is in the process stages and I'm looking forward to getting it out there, also I'd like to send out a very special thank you to Hitman Howie Tee and his anonymous protege for kindly hitting me up on the comments page and by e-mail...

It was my pleasure Howie and it just makes this blog shit all worth it.

So in the meantime (I always think of Black Sheep when I say that...ha ha) here is another fat mixtape, to be honest I am aware that some of these
tracks have featured on other mixtapes over the years and you might have heard some of these already...but if not...please enjoy and I was thinking about doing a shout out list...but you know who you all are...and you are the reasons I keep doing this blog so I can pass on what I know and introduce you to some dope joints you may not have heard before.

and it goes a little something like this...

1-Edan-Rap Beautician (2001)
Produced by Edan
off the Home (Boston Underground Hip Hop CD)

The intelligent, psychedelic madness that is Edan The Humble Magnificent...is one of rap's greatest artists and producers, he is never afraid to take chances and makes that fresh ill 80's and 90's sounding Hip Hop.

Edan cares about the culture and he should hurry up with a new album, Beauty and The Beat was incredible and will still f--k kids heads up 10-20 years from now.

This dope joint is from a great CD I picked up in 2001 and also had Insight, Ed OG, Reks, Krumb Snatcha, OVM, Raw Produce, Chan and others, I love how compressed Edan's drums are on this and that LL Cool J sample, the dusty loop and scratches makes this in my humble (magnificent) opinion one of his greatest ever tracks.

Record button warlord indeed...

2-Black Madness-Igpay Atinlay (1993)
Produced by DJ Joe Quixx
off the Igpay Atinlay/Two Tears in A Bucket 12" (1993)

This was one of those joints that was just fat and would sound good in clubs and on stereos and of course in the Walkman (with Xtra Bass Boost ha ha), a kind of what the f...? track because it was too MC's, Blackman and Madd Poet from Flatbush, Brooklynnnnnnnnnn no less and on a pig latin tip...but it worked.

Joe Q hooked up a hype drum loop, simple horns and a very 90's bassline, it was indeed a great party jam and would still rock clubs today...this Jam is...

Word...Black Madness released another single Wild Brooklyn Bandits in 1993 and then sadly vanished.

The crazy ill rap magazine collector Slurg put up this article of the duo...
http://pressrewind.wordpress.com/2006/12/14/black-madness

3-Diff Productionz-Skinz (Remix)(1995)
Produced by Dow Brain and Brad Young
http://alkuttraz.blogspot.com/search?q=Street+Poets

A very special Thank You to the Crates of AG for this one, I actually missed this 12" the first time around (stupidly I ordered only 2 copies when I worked in a record store) and never saw it again, finding it online again was enough for me, as soon as this reaches my speakers or headphones I think of the year 1995 and love the feel good sound overall

The remix is much better than the original and you will be signing that hook in no time...

Street Poets were yet another talented Boston crew.

4-King Sun-You Don't Know Me (1999)
Produced by Kenny Dope
off the Come and Get Me 12"
(1999)

Released on little known independent record label Pride, this was the King still showing that at the end of the ninety-dec (90's decade) he could still hold it down.

I found it interesting that Kenny Dope after years of producing House records and many other genres could still lace King Sun with a raw string filled and bass heavy track.

I don't really know a lot about this cut to be honest and I have no idea when it was actually recorded,it doesn't matter I am just really pleased to find this and never thought I would ever would.

We need King Sun around these days to teach these kids what real battling and rhyming means.
Sun Dullah's My Space page
http://www.myspace.com/kingsunge

5-Madstyle-Run (1993)
Produced by Frankie Cutlass
off the Run 12" and Bloodrush LP
(1993)

Ahhhh the 90's, when everything was Fat or Phat, Slammin' and kids were Catching Wreck but mostly it was the decade when Hip Hop had Mad, Styles,Flow, Lyrics, Skills, Flavour etc...and Madstyle were probably only destined for one album, but Bloodrush was a good album and still holds up today.

Run was the first single and samples a legendary Old School Rap crew who once claimed there is none higher ;D
Madstyle dropped a hard hitting single with the jazz drums section of the infamous Bob James's Nautilus that Large Pro first used for Live at The BBQ' and the same section of horns that Showbiz used for Party Groove while the MC's delivered rhymes in an aggressive tone...but that was the Madstyle.

6-Us Plus One-Gettin' Lyrical (1995)
Produced by True Da Grynch (Evil Twins)
off the Gettin Lyrical/Poets Get Lyrical 12"
(1995)

Busssssshhhhhhwiccckkkkk...another jewel that I first heard on that DJ Backspin mixtape I often talk about, Gettin Lyrical is pure Brooklyn, hard as hell drums, ill horns, a speaker shattering bassline and piano keys popping up every now and then.

U.P.O. (Mr Barbarian, Quik Da Barbarian,Flip Flop Popcorn and Dead Eye), these kids were down with 5ft of Black Moon and after 5 and Buckshot had a fallout they refer to Buck as a B.A.N.

I
honestly wish I had more information about this and the old Internets isn't helping much...I do know that they released Murder Me in 1996 and then vanished.

7-Craig G-Shootin The Gift (Remix) (1989)
Produced by Marley Marl
off the Shootin The Gift 12"

It is very sad news that the great Marley
* had a heart attack on the 6th June 2007 and I wish him a full recovery, It will be a very depressing day in Hip Hop when we lose Marley but thankfully he is still with us and I want all of you that read this to go out and buy the dope KRS ONE & Marley Marl Hip Hop Lives album.

This remix made the LP version pale in comparison, full of horn and drum samples from the late, great James Brown and some ill cowbells in the mix, topped off with Craig's smooth flow and a Big Daddy Kane vocal sample...listening to this again made me think, wow...imagine if Craig G's-The Kingpin LP was like this.

Kingpin was honestly a bit of a disappointment for a first album, but I guess when they recorded it, Hip House was still popular and they wanted to cover a lot of bases, still there are some dope tracks on the album.

8-Greyson and Jasun-No Shortz (1991)
Produced by Vance Wright
off the Get Bizzy 12"
(1991)

This dope Non LP cut was on the 12" of Get Bizzy and uses the infamous The Power (Chill Rob G) cowbells sample and a simple James Brown guitar lick...along with dope horns for the breakdown and a well fitting Rakim sample, if you enjoyed the Sweatin Me Wet album you will know what to expect a super duper Thank You to raredave from DWG for this goodie.

9-Leaders of The New School-Shining Star (1991)
Produced by Backspin
from the Strictly Business soundtrack
(1991)

I have always though that this was an incredible use of James's Get On The Good Foot, this cut was off the soundtrack to a movie I don't think I ever saw (Strictly Business) and it's a shame not a lot of people have heard it...

Some of you rap nerds (b-b-b-be proud of who you areeeeeeee....ha ha) will notice that they also used this sample for the intro of 1993's T.I.M.E. album, but this track is great... all of the Leaders are on top notch form and this should have been released as a 12" with Grand Puba's Fat Rat on the B-Side (also on this soundtrack)

10-Unanimous Decision-Bomb Diffusal (1992)
Produced by
Unanimous Decision
off the Rap Sings The Blues EP
(1992)

I remember getting a dub (a copy of a recorded cassette) off a dope mix of UK Hip Hop and it had a track by this crew called U.D....it was Strictly Dope and I always looked in record stores for them but that was all of the info I had so I never found anything else...until this year.

Thanks to DDD and his amazing collection, I got the Rap Sings The Blues EP and I love it, released in 1992 on Kold Sweat records.

I still find it hard to fathom that this was from 1992 because damn these kids were on point, that Spanish guitar loop running through Bomb Diffusal is just ill and I love the drums and the flows of each MC, I am also very curious about who they were taking shots at on this...I am guessing fake gangsters.

Listen closely and you will here them diss some artist that was on Capitol records...are there any Old School Hip Hop heads that know?

11-Grandaddy I.U.-Something New (Remix) (1990)
Produced by Cutmaster Cool V
off the Something New 12"
(1990)

I always wanted to hear the IU and Big Daddy Kane do a duet together it would have been a pimped out affair but with dope rhymes and metaphors...

Cutmaster Cool V's remix uses the drums from Kool & The Gang's-N.T., speeds them up a little and adds compression and a sample and a dope sample, while I U flows on and Biz Markie does his crazy sing song steez to great effect.

I like this a lot more than the LP version and if you haven't check that Smooth Assassin LP...then what are you waiting for?, hard to believe this is over 17 years old...

Drayz and Skoob with Stretch Armstrong

12-Das EFX-Real Hip Hop (Remix)(1995)
Produced by PMD
off the Real Hip Hop 12"
(1995)

Without a doubt diggedy Das EFX's 2nd best album was Hold It Down and this 12" inch and album joint was originally produced by DJ Premier and remixed by Pete Rock, Solid Scheme and PMD.

PMD's remix was exactly what you would expect
a muddy and rumbling bass, Joe Tex drums (used on the original) and just the signature hardcore funk from the Mic Doc, it's not classic or brilliant but it's solid and sounded more '92 than it did '95, it's a shame that the hundreds of Das biters actually ended the career of the originators, as a longtime fan though I do believe that they have one more dope album in them.

13-Sid & B-Tonn-Deathwish (1990)
Produced by Sidney Reynolds
off the Deathwish 12" (1990)

Another joint that is over 17 years old and a duo that had promise but never released an album, using a classic Eddie Kendricks sample (also used by Raheem and EPMD), a Chuck D vocal (guess which one?)smooth cuts (yes of JB) and a vocal tone similar to PMD...I always enjoyed this and the remix.

Sid was Sidney Reynolds and also produced for Nikki-D,Slick Rick and Queen Latifah, I'm not sure what he does these days though.

14-TFS-The Bop Step (Mix Phade Remix) (1992)
Produced by
Flashback and Relay
off the The Bop Step 12"
(1992)

Another remix I had searched for many, many years for ending up getting on vinyl and mp3 (good looking RHHB) in the same week...say word!, a super dope remix as well and sounded completely different from the original album version.

Sporting fat drums,a bassline you could hum for days and some great horns, Flashback and Relay bounce rhymes off each other like an early EPMD...and I have always thought it was a shame that we never got The Whole Shebang Volume 2...oh well you can't have it all.

15-Alphabet Soup-Uncle Sam 1st Draft (1991)
Produced by Yasin Gregg
off the A Sunny Day in Harlem EP (1991)

A Sunny Day in Harlem got a lot of good feedback and I had to give you some more, again these kids were too ill for words and this joint rides on some fast Five Stairsteps (I think) drums, horns and breaks down into other beats (kind of like LONS used too).

I feel that this EP should be re-released because I know a lot of todays kids would dig the authentic style and production techniques and the lyrics are message based...dope anti-war lyrics on this one and check the LL Cool J and Jungle Brothers vocal samples that make up the hook and the ill whistle at the ending of the track.

More of the 'Soup on the next mixtape...:D

16-The Inviseez-Haagen Daj (1994)
Produced by Mark Sparks
off the
Haagen Daj 12" (1994)

If Natalie Portman was an ice cream she would be the most delicious flavour of ice cream there ever was and this joint here shows that Wu weren't the first rap artists to compare Women to flavours of ice cream...word son.

The Inviseez also known as The Invisible Men released this jewel in 1994 when East Coast was all about fat drums, horns, basslines and crispy bacon samples...to be honest I only ever had this on a tape and the quality was poor, so to have it rocking through my speakers 13 years later just makes me appreciate it that much more.

Released on Henchmen records with the B-side cut being Gotta To Be Real and their only 12"...highlight of this cut is when the MC goes "she said "I'm marrrrrrieeeddddddddd...I'm a librariannnnnnn...."

A super dupa shout out to DDD for the hook up...much appreciated bro...:D

17-Top Choice Clique-Push It Past Red (1995)
Produced by Gemini and
Top Choice Clique
off the Push It Part Red 12"
(1995)

Yep, the ill Boston crew that hit us off with the classic Piece of Mind wayback (oh wayback) in 1989, released this in 1995, it's not classic but it's still a solid slice of Boston 90's Hip Hop and deserves to be heard, they released this 12" with a with another version of
Push It Past Red and Survival

The Video
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OaotMUWYvsA&mode=related&search=

18-Showbiz and AG-Fat Pockets (Radio Remix Version)(1992)
Produced by
Showbiz
off the Fat Pockets 12" (1992)

Early DITC in full f--king effect kid, I noticed that a lot of kids at You Tube have been commenting on the classic track and video and I sent an mp3 to one user who said he had never had this version, this in turn led to other e-mails thanking me for the hook up...all good babypah.

A very dope remix, those horns are so ill and the drums oh Man, I even enjoy the lyrics changed for radio because changing "when I'm large, hoes give me head on an escalator to smile at me on an escalator you can't help but chuckle, but it's the production and Show (I never understood why he gave up the mic) and AG's flows are timeless on this...it's no wonder they used this version for the video...see if you can spot a Lakim Shabazz cameo...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ct_7mC6PCg

19-Yaggfu Front-Left Field (Remix) (1994)
Produced by Yaggfu Front & Greg The Muthafu*kin Man
off the Left Field 12" (1994)

I have always had a soft spot for the Yagffu, they had great beats and character and were one of the first North Carolina crews to make a name for themselves...and put their city on the map, long, long before 9th Wonder and The Justus League, this remix has some crispy bacon, head nodding drums and mellow keys...with dope and honest rhymes "I should be swimming in all the lovely Women... but yo I'm not"...how many MC's would have the balls to day that these days?...a dope remix from a dope crew.

Yaggfu's Blog

20-The Nonce-Bus Stops (Token & A Transfer Remix) (1995)
Produced by
The Nonce-
off the Bus Stops 12"(1995)

It is still very sad that the talented West Coast artist Yusef Afloat took his own life over 7 years ago (he wasn't murdered as some media reported) but it's great that we can still remember him through the dope music he made with his MC partner Sach (Nouka Basetype), this chil, lights down low, blunts being passed around remix was just smooth and I found it a perfect way to end off this mixtape...I hope you do as well.

Bee Why "The Lost Tapes" features 13 rare and unreleased recordings from the Queens Emcee who first popped on the scene with his now highly collectible 12” single "The Boros" back in 1997. He then released 2 more singles "Remember the Time" and "G.A.T.S". Bee Why has made his mark in the underground Hip Hop scene with a then unknown producer Gee The Nutty Professor who later changed his name to Ayatollah. Ayatollah later produced many classics records for Mos Def , Tragedy Khadafi, Rakim, Masta Ace, Inspectah Deck, Cormega and many more. With all 13 tracks produced by Gee, it gives you a rare look into Ayatollah’s first recorded production which would later shape his hip hop sound.

Oh man...you may have noticed that I have posted
Remember the Time and G.A.T.S on previous mixtapes, I can tell you this will be an essential purchase, the kid is dope and this is the first time I knew that it was Ayatollah, those sneaky MF'ers...

Peace

oh and I might be away for a week or so as I am re-locating...so enjoy the mixtape in the meantime.

Much Love

I have had a few requests (by the way it's mad good to see the coldrockdaspot e-mail getting used) to do another of these, so I did and I honestly went through over 200 tracks and I have no doubt you have these or have heard them before... if not...enjoy

Oh and I was also asked to to do the track listings in Capitals as it's easier for kids to tag them...it's all Kool Herc,D,G Rap,Rock Steady,Chip,Kim,EQ,Mike Ski,Akeim,Doobie, Moe Dee,Rock Jay,Key,Rockski, Ski,Red Alert Kieth and The Gang...:D and now the breakdown..

1-A Tribe Called Quest (ft Baby Bam)-If The Papes Come (Original Version)

Still one of the greatest uses of Lou Donaldson's infamous Pot Belly and Tip and Bam sound so ill over this, hard to believe it's 17 years old...will there ever be an ATCQ reunion?, I'm not really sure...maybe...but probably not.

2-Strugglin' Souls-Can't Find My Tribe (1992) of the Manic Depression LP

I can't even remember where I got this from but it was either last year or in 2005 and man am I glad I found it, talk about unheard of and completely forgotten...this track is just dope and so smooth, I love the rhymes, James Brown beats, smooth sample and bassline and a well chosen Queen Latifah vocal cut....

3-Mission-Soul Chips (2001)

I tried a lot of different tracks to follow the
Strugglin' Souls one and this Mission track produced by Hispanik (Molemen) with cuts by Vin Roc seemed to be the right one and is masterful to these ears,I can see this being appreciated in ten years time, everything is right about it, the slow drums, mood and tempo, there isn't a Mission anymore as they became the Crown City Rockers and now most have branched off into solo work, MC Rasheed Ahmad and Headnodic in particular.

4-Blak Forest-4th Quarter (1997) off the You Are Now Entering The...

Tell me how you could not dig this, what with the crispy bacon (scratchy sample) the reverb on the drums, and the laid back tone...it's a perfect song to play at night and get blazed too...or to just rock in the headphones...that Blak Forest LP was way to slept on in my opinion, it had the first appearance from Kazi and a lot of other talented MC's along with dope production.

5-Screwball-On Point (1998) off Hip Hop Independents Day Volume 2 (Nervous)
*Also the B-Side on the 12" to Cormega's "Fuck Nas" (limited)

Hooooooo Haaaaaa...that guitar loop, muffled bassline and solid drums always get me and those rowdy MF's from Queens will always hold a special place in my collection for me, they just had it....do you know what I mean?, each MC delivered to his fullest and they ripped shop over ill beats from the likes of oh...DJ Premier, Pete Rock, Mike Heron (who produced this track) check Unkut.com for a very interesting interview with him.
http://www.unkut.com/2007/05/hydra-special-mike-heron-interview

Also
The Beatnuts, Godfather Don and many others...

6-Finsta Bundy-
Payday Is Bliss (1992)-B-Side of Finsta Baby

Where to start here?, ill wah wah guitar loop (also used by 45 King) and the dope EPMD-Rampage drums
Evil Dee produced this and it was just as dope as Finsta Baby if you ask me...Finsta had a unique voice and I dig the way he rhymed Manage with Sandwich...

7-The Beatnuts ft Poet-Thinkin 'Bout Ca$h (1997)-off the Stone Crazy album

This was one of the ultimate Queens connections right here,"It be a screw to all ball and a beat to a nut" crazy beat digging heads The Nuts looped up the ill Lou Rawls Lifetime Monologue drums and sprinkled quirky
organs keyboards and a moody bassline, but Poet and Hostyle's cameos makes this track that much special, one of my faves off the Stone Crazy album.

8-Darc Mind-Dot Chu In The Eye (1996) off the Bi-Polar Mix Tape

I love this damn track, there is a certain mystique to it and I love the way X Ray used the Lou Rawls drums, the atmospheric bassline and Kev Roc's deep vocal tone just meshing with the track perfectly...I find listening to this in the dark can provide some awesome scenes in your head of a foggy night and a sinister atmosphere.

9-Diamond Shell-Back 'Em Up (ft Diamond J on the cut) (1991) off the The Grand Diamond Imperial Shell LP

There was something very distinctive about Diamond Shell, the Biz Mark,Biz Mark's younger brother and his only album recorded at the infamous Powerplay recording studio's...this track had a dope drums and an addictive bassline, Shell flowed liked good wine and this was pure 90's and having Diamond J (a former EPMD DJ) on the cuts was an added bonus

10-Kinetic Order-Deconstruct (1991)

Thanks to my man Roy Johnson for this, I feel envious that I wasn't able to hear what the Chicago underground was offering Hip Hop in the 90's, this ill track was released in 1991 and Roy also hooked me up with a lot of other rare Chicago underground material, it's just amazing and when I first heard this, I got that chill down my spine.

More on the next mix tape.

11-Godfather Don-Colors of Death (unreleased off
Slave of New York EP (Limited Edition)

Okay first up, I missed out on the Slave of New York EP and was sent a copy online, so a MASSIVE thank you to
http://www.diggerswithgratitude.com
for getting these jewels from the Don himself and releasing very limited copies on vinyl and for being a welcoming forum and information site, in a word this track is just nuts and I and a few others think the Jazz bassline Don samples here is from the same track used on the Arsonist's The Session, this is pretty much just classic Godfather Don and that's all that needs to be said.

12-Top Quality-Magnum Opus (Charlie Marotta Remix) (1993)

Another track, I only ever had on a mix tape and boy am I glad I found this online, the drums bang hard and you will notice that the piano sample is the same that the Gravediggaz's used for Constant Elevation (Biz used it too) but what I dig the most about this remix is how it sounds completely different from the original version, I don't really know why TQ was so slept on.

13-The Arsonists-Universal Skills (1999) off the Everything Is Nice: The Matador Records 10th Anniversary Anthology
CD

I don't even know why this crew broke up because they were all talented and this track was first featured on the record label they were signed to after Fondle 'Em...Matador's 10th year anniversary album on the third disc which contained all previously unreleased tracks, I really like this, the slow drums, the rhymes, the flow and the X-Clan and Big Daddy Kane samples are all dope.

I have no clue who produced this but it could have been D-Stroy,Freestyle,Swel or Q-Unique.

14-Icons-Fools With No Rhyme Skills (1998) off the What Legends Are Made Of LP

I am willing to bet that as soon as you saw that title you were thinking off the Guru line, right?...anyways they do cut that hook up over some dope fast drums and rapid yet concise flows from
Frosty da Know-Matic and Ech-U-Sketch you might also be asking who the f--k are the Icons?.

Good question, from memory they were a San Diego crew and sadly there is very little on the internet about them which sucks, because the LP was dope and I have it somewhere and will get it up here when I do.

15-Latee-Wake Up (1988)-off the No Tricks 12"

Even though No Tricks is one of the greatest tracks from the 80's, the b-side was just as dope, a very smooth and simple 45 King production (drums, bass and horns) that Latee dominated his vocals with, I know I keep it saying it but this will be 20 years old next year and it doesn't sound like it, It's a shame that Latee never had an album or that we didn't get a full Flavor Unit album.

NB: It's looking a lot like that DJ Mark The 45 King will be the next Producer I will document, I promise you that post will be off the meter...and it will be more than one, most likely more than 2 to be honest.

16-MC Lyte-Paper Thin (Audio 2 remix)

This remix is dope and sounds very little like the original, lots of familiar samples and a classic 80's looped up drum...it's not as good as the original but still a great remix and man MC Lyte has such a great voice and flow and was all about the rhymes as well. Family eh?...damn.

17-Ground Floor-One Two (1994) off the One Two/Dig On That (ft Lord Finesse) 12"

For some reason, this has ended up on my headphone playlist a lot lately, I guess it's the sheer illness of that distorted and slowed down piano and then that horn and hard knocking drums with the MC's passing the mic back and forth and running game like "Nike on a Basketball court".

I wish I knew why these kids never had an album, they had their first 12" A-Side produced by the great Lord Finesse and a dope video as well...some things just don't have answers I guess.

18-Strict Flow-Radio (1999) off the People On Lock 12"

I think this is just one of those joints, it was released in 1999 and produced by George Sulmers, who did some beats for J-Live and had an awesome loop,a crying baby sample, hard drums, bass and some tight cuts about radio heads knocked to the future shock ...(I still can't think who that is though sorry)

What was disappointing was the album, it just didn't have any tracks compared to this and it was alright but sadly fairly forgettable.

19-Alphabet Soup-Sunny Day In Harlem (1991)

Someone with some money and good connections should get this re-released because it is pure quality and I have to send a mad shout to Digger D D for hooking me up with some goodies lately.

I could never get hold of this 12" and to hear this in headphones, will make you wonder how such talent went unrecognized, they are mos def in the De La Soul, Tribe, KMD, UMC's, mode but they were still their own group.

20-Top Quality-What (Scratch Mix-Jesse West)

Last but not least, Top Quality catching wreck over the Ode To Billy Joe drums and a deep rumbling bass-line, I think that is more than enough reason to listen...

1. a.t.c.q.ft baby bam - if the papes come (original version)
2. strugglin' souls - cant find my tribe
3. mission - soul chips
4. blak forest - the fourth quarter
5. screwball - on point
6. finsta bundy - payday is bliss
7.beatnuts ft poet_&_hostyle -thinkin bout cash
8-darc mind - dot-chu 'n the eye
9-diamond shell- back 'em up
10-kinetic order-deconstruct
11-godfather don-colors of death
12-top quality -magnum opus (remix)
13-arsonists- universal skills
14-icons-fools with no rhyme skills
15-latee - wake up
16-mc lyte-paper thin (audio two remix)
17-ground floor- one two
18-strict flow-radio
19-alphabet soup - sunny day in harlem
20-top quality-what (scratch version)
