Joint of the Week: PMD - Many Often Wonder (1997)

I was a big fan of PMD's second solo album (which celebrated it's 20th year anniversary in 2016) and this cut was recorded at the same time that he did the sinister strings laden remix for "It's A Pee 97" with Prodigy (and Havoc on production) also on this 12" was the Charlie Marrotta produced "Kool Kat" and the sequel (of sorts) to 1989's "Knick Knack Paddy Wack" only this time PMD enlisted Das EFX, L Da Pro (as far as I'm aware this was all he was ever on) and Nocturnal (who also had potential but vanished from the scene) on mic duties.

Never the less "Many Often Wonder" is a dope self-produced joint that is bare bones in production, reminiscent of early 90's PMD and contains a vocal sample of EPMD's "Rampage" cut.

P.S. I will no longer be using the JMS Soundcloud account as Soundcloud restricts pretty much everything I upload.

I have created an Audiomack account so feel free to follow or send requests.

Massive props to Beatsmith for this one, here is the original version of "Hard Like A Criminal" taken off the advanced promo tape of Dead Serious in 1991

Here is the version that was eventually released as a B-Side on the "Straight Out The Sewer" 12" in 1992.

EPMD & The Hit Squad Live @Best Buy Theater NYC Feb 24th 2012

The much anticipated Hit Squad reunion show slammed the Best Buy Theater in New York last night and by all accounts from some good people on Facebook it was an unforgettable night, mad hype and it just went off like crazy, stupid, dope... the legends that hit the stage were..EPMD, DJ Scratch, Redman, Das EFX, Kieth Murray, K-Solo, Knucklehedz plus guest Method Man.

There were also a lot of artists and DJ's in the audience including the dope DJ JS-1 who wrote the following...

The Hit Squad Reunion show in NYC was great last night. EPMD is easily one of the greatest hip hop artists of all time, if not thee best. They never compromised their music to be slaves to the industry or the times. I was very happy that they rotated acts and songs instead of each group doing full sets. I was pleased to see the Tom J Knucklehedz perform, although i wish they did a few more songs. i loved their music. Keith Murray is insane. (already knew that...) Redman is always the best performer on the mic at any show, and this was no different. Ready Cee spun some treats at the beginning. THANK GOODNESS FunkFlex was not there, although Rosenburg spun some commercial songs on cd after he got booed. LOL. I can say it was quite confusing to see some dude who was announced as "one of the best djays in the tri-state area" perform HORRIBLE wanna-bee TI songs for 20 minutes. that REALLY sucked. nice to be friends with the promoters... Das Efx was also really on point with how they sounded and knowing the lyrics to all their songs unlike a few others... hahaha. Overall it was jam-packed and great... Highlights were definitely seeing them perform HARDCORE w Redman and HEADBANGER w Red n K-Solo, and the hilarious conversation i had w Mr. Walt of the Beatminerz. It was also great that i avoided all the usual suspects who talk to me about sh*t i dont wanna talk about. lol. #HIPHOP if you weren't there, but in NYC, you are crazy..

So with a massive thanks to Big Mike Jackson and Tom J from The Knucklehedz I can share these dope pics for those of that were not able to be at this historic event which also included EPMD and DJ Scratch donning Adidas tracksuits, hats and chains in a tribute to the great RUN DMC.

Real Hip Hop in E F F E C T.

Peace

Mad props to those who have voted for me as T.R.O.Y. mod of the year

I want to thank everyone of you that left kind, positive and dope comments, I want to thank every reader that I speak to regularly through e-mail... you have made CDRS the great place it is today.

I was going to do a list but there are to many names... so if you read this Thank You as well :D

Next year is going to be mad CRDS will be kicking off with the first Back To 88 The Great compilations and write ups, as well as more JVC Tapedeck Fat Tapes and remix comps, so Happy Christmas and have a safe time, eat drink and be merry and have a good snooze after Christmas lunch after undoing your belt...haha

The figgedy funk rippers...

A friend told me he saw Das EFX live in Europe sometime this year and he said that they still have it, so let's hope that they can bring that to a dope album, I do get the feeling that they might be on EPMD's We Mean Business, but don't know for sure.

Let's get a few things cleared up here, Das were never gimmick rappers, listen to the powerful deliveries Drayz and Skoob gave and their lyrics were clever and often funny as hell, how can you deny the incredible chemistry these 2 had?

What became the gimmick was the one-off crews and groups that one ran with it and maybe had a single or an album and then vanished.

I know a lot of heads say that they bit the style off Demon Boyz from the UK, but I disagree, I mean I can hear it a little and I guess the Demon Boyz style was influenced by reggae/dancehall and ragga.

I think all Das did was take a rapid style, and add their own flavour to it.

Anyway, I have always been a big fan of Diggy Das and was disappointed that 1998's Generation EFX album was very weak, the solo efforts from the duo haven't been that strong either.

So here is a little compilation I did up and I do know that there have already been Das EFX remixes albums, but this is the CRDS one and I am pretty sure I got everything here.

So with that said

Giggedy grab your headphones, crack a brew, kick your feet up and enjoy the real Hip Hop.
