1991-Ice-T vs NWA

While I am sitting at home recovering from the flu, I have been listening to some of my favourite albums that were released in 1991 and it is hard to believe that these two West Coast classics are now 20 years old, but that is the reality and both albums are essential in any true Hip Hop heads collection.

Both Original Gangster and Efilrofzaggin did really well in the Billboard charts back in 1991 with Efil4zaggin placing at the top spot for a number of weeks and both albums contained great production and were steeped in controversy, particularly the NWA album as it had quite a few misogynistic and violent themes running through out the album, Ice-T's album did as well but not nearly as much as NWA's album did.

So the question is...which album was the better album in your opinion?...

Or

Both albums have classic tracks and both have some truly awful ones.

While I have NO doubt that Ice T is the nicest person involved in making these albums, I have to say that NWA's is BY FAR the better album.

In fact, it's among st my holy trinity of rap albums (which also includes Paul's Boutique and Fear Of A Black Planet).

Both were good and I have both. But OG was a little more complete and well rounded. N4L had a lot of the same typical NWA themes about jackin fools and fuckin bitches. And they spent time lashing out at Ice Cube for leaving. Plus without Ice Cube to write their rhymes, the lyrical quality suffered a little. Both dope but my vote is for OG.

This is a great topic as I've have incredible memories of both of these albums! N.W.A was trying to "prove" themselves after Cube left and Iceberg found himself with what may be his most "complete" project. Really tough choice, but I'll go with Iceberg in a photo finish on this one. On a side note, Dr. Dre changed his whole sound only a few months later as he moved away from Ruthless Records.

Feel better Jaz!!!

No Question it's ICE. niggazforlife has always been over-rated. The production is alright but it's overshadowed by the stupid lyrics. FLTG Mooovin

Great question...

I have to go with OG on this one, and it really didn't take me a whole lot of time to decide. OG is easily Ice's best album, and while Niggaz4Life is a classic as well, it just doesn't have the breadth that OG has.

Now, if you were comparing Straight Outta Compton to OG, that'd be a different story. I do realize, though, that you are comparing them based on release year.

Oddly enough, you've just prompted me to start iTunes and give Niggaz4Life a spin. Man, what an album. They just don't make 'em like they used to.
