Get well soon MCA...

I grew up on the Beastie Boys, so it was with sadness that I heard about Adam Yauch's recent diagnosis of cancer, as a long time fan, I wish him all the best in recovery and I look forward to the Beastie Boys new album, Hot Sauce Committee

This story made our local news and it just shows how influential the Beasties still are

In a video announcement at the group's website, Beastie Boys' Adam "MCA" Yauch announced that he was recently diagnosed with cancer of a salivary gland and lymph node. The prognosis seems positive--he refers to having surgery next week, and localized radiation treatments after that, but also notes that he had a full-body scan and that the cancer has not spread anywhere else in his body.

All Beastie Boys shows are canceled for now, and the band's new album, Hot Sauce Committee, which was supposed to be released in September, will be pushed back to a later date.

Mad, Mad, Mad

Back in the 90's, when certain Hip Hop lingo was
used, it got used a lot, take for instance Flavo(u)r, or Fat (Phat) or Def or Ill, but one word that is still used by many artists and is still used to describe something as dope or really ill, or to mean a lot... is the word Mad.

Mad groups (ha!) and artists either named their group or themselves from this word, ie

Mad Flava,
Mad Kap

Mad Skillz
Mad Drauma
Madlib
Mad Lion
Da Mad Scientist
Mad Shorties
Mad Flowas
Ruggedness Madd Drama

Mad Racket
Mad Cobra
Mad Mike
The Mischevious LQ & The Mad Mischief Crew
Mad Doctor X
M.A.D.
Kwest The Madd Lad
Madd Syco
Mad African
Da Mad Klique
Mad Rapper

Masta Ace even joked about the word Mad, when he said "I got the mad knife, I'm mad mean, I kill mad crews, I read mad magazine, on his classic joint "Saturday Night Live".

I decided to put together a 15 track compilation of artists and groups with the word Mad in their title... this was fun to make and I hope you enjoy it.

R.I.P. Michael Joseph Jackson

:( Wow, this really is the end of an era isn't it?, I know why thousands and thousands (actually it's probably millions) all over the World shed tears and celebrate the strange but incredible career of Michael Joseph Jackson, Michael was an amazing singer/vocalist, dancer and all round talent, I don't know many people that don't know who Michael was and how he influenced so many, but on the real, I am really glad he has now found everlasting peace, Michael didn't have a happy life and behind the smile was years of sadness, but he kept on and was about to embark on a MASSIVE tour, 50 shows, there has been dumb speculation that maybe MJ faked his death, but as a longtime fan, I just don't see it, these concerts he was about to embark on, were to pay off debts and the story goes that he was excited and rehearsing a lot, if the rumours about his painkiller addiction are true, then it's easy to see why Michael burned out.

I don't even know where to start about MJ, I do remember hearing early Jackson 5 material on the radio and pulling out my Dad's Off The Wall album and absolutely loving it when I was a boy and then when Thriller came out I bought the vinyl (still have it) and I was a huge fan, I loved every single track off that album, but "Human Nature" will always play a special part, due to the fact that I had the biggest crush on this girl and that song always made me think of her, she had a boyfriend at the time and I wasn't even acknowledged really, but I always think of her when I listen to "Human Nature" and I remember the year, 1982 when I first heard that song (in fact I was listening to it while typing) and getting a flood of great memories, I also remember the time my step brother came home smiling and he had bought me the Bad tape along with a big poster of the album cover for my birthday, man I wish I still had that and I wish I still had the stickers and cards I used to buy from the dairy (with the sugar filled pink bubble gum), I also regret not ever seeing him live, I have seen (almost) all of my rap heroes, but never Michael.

The thing with Michael's music, it created memories and he had a voice and style that was unique and beautiful, I understand why people have been gathering to his star on the Hollywood walk of fame, I understand why music video channels have been playing Michael Jackson videos over and over, I understand why DJ's and blogs have been putting together special mixes and tributes, I understand why Michael was the voice of many decades and meant so much to so many people, whether it was "Ben" or Michael's efforts with the Jackson 5.

Michael's voice and presence was inescapable and as a long time and saddened fan, I don't believe he was a child molester and I am not willing to go any further with that statement.

I do believe that he was very unhappy for most of his life and that he never had a real childhood, because he was thrust into the spotlight at such an early age and I do believe that Joe Jackson's hard nose parenting, had a lot to do with Michael's unhappiness in later life, but when you hear Michael's music, all that just vanishes and I believe that's when he was at his peak, singing and performing, making music that spread across the globe and spans generation to generation, just like the great, late Bob Marley and rock icon Jimi Hendrix.

R.I.P. Michael, thanks for the great, timeless music and memories, there won't ever be another like you, at least , not in my lifetime.

DJ Matt Nyce-Mid School Heat Volume 1/R.I.P. Iz The Wiz

My Man, DJ Matt Nyce (a true connoisseur of that real Hip Hop) did up a dope mix of some, obscure, rare and ultimately ill joints on this Mid-School Heat mix, the tracklisting comes with the download
, I know you are going to dig this.

R.I.P. to the legendary aerosol King, Iz The Wiz

Iz was from the New York borough of Queens. Beginning in 1972, he became a long reigning All-City king of New York known primarily for his quick, simple two letter tag, Iz represented a new breed of fame-obsessed writers concerned with finding the perfect balance between quantity and quality. He was also featured in the 1983 documentary Style Wars.

From years of using toxic aerosol products without any type of protective mask, Iz was diagnosed with kidney failure in 1996. In early 2000, in an interview for Style Wars revisited, he commented that he would give up all his past fame for full health. In August of 2003 he held a gallery showcasing his legal artwork in New York.

IZ also had his art cameoed in the game: Marc Ecko's Getting Up.

After struggling with kidney failure for many years, Iz The Wiz passed away on the 17th of June, 2009

R.I.P. Tony Costa aka TC aka Tone

Man, sometimes life is just not fair, I heard that someone died while colliding with another surfer on the radio earlier this week and it wasn't until today, that I found out it was an old friend of mine, a real humble and down to earth dude that was the one that was tragically killed doing (besides Hip Hop) what he loved.

A
Father of two and with another child on the way, I want to send my utmost condolences out to his wife, Sam and his two little girls Jahmin and Unity and entire Family.

I remember the day I first met Tone, it was sometime in the early 90's and he was freestyling to me and I was really impressed with his flow and how passionate he was about Hip Hop, we would always see each other at gigs and talk about various albums, artists and how his music was coming along, Tone was part of Palmerston North rap outfit Illy Spittaz and Wellington crew Strange Tongues, he was a cool MC and rhymed about real life things, he also enjoyed making beats.

Tone, or as I liked you to call you Top Cat, thank you for the many memories and the time I got to spend with you while you were here, you were one of a kind and will never be forgotten, last thing I want to say is, it's obvious how much you meant to so many people bro, you made the front page of our local newspaper.

Good journeys my friend, good journeys

RE-UP: Chill...A Beatnut.!...Beatnuts-The Nuts Remix Files...

I have had a few requests for this one, so here it is re-upped with an extra track, enjoy.

Chill...A Beatnut.!...Beatnuts-The Nuts Remix Files...

First up, yep I have indeed done a post on the infamous Corona, Queens cats before but this one is a little different to that one and that one
http://coldrockdaspot.blogspot.com/2007/01/lets-take-trip-to-nutshop.html
(sorry if the You Tube links don't work anymore)

was actually my first ever post and with the way the 45 King, PMD, Gang Starr, EPMD etc comps are going, I felt it was time for a 21 track compilation (mix, fat tape) of strictly Beatnuts remixes. (by they way infinite thanks for the awesome feedback and comments and to my new readers, welcome and to my blog family...word up.

I personally feel that the Big City album

was heavily slept on and there are some great tracks on it,in fact I like the whole album, but I do however feel that because JuJu was missing from it, it would have been a different album.

If you aren't feeling this album, get a friend that has a super fat stereo system in his car and then really hear it, or play it on your stereo loud to get the full effect, how anyone can not feel the bugged synth on "Big City" or the addictive loop and deep bassline on "Runnin' Around" is beyond me.

What I love the most about The Beatnuts, apart from their classic beats, basslines, horns and dope loops and amusing rhymes, is their true dedication, almost every year, they are there either producing, doing a remix or rhyming on someone else's records and they have been doing that since the early 90's.

Yes, Ju and Les will return with another album most likely next year but man, I just don't understand why Al Tariq can't be there as well...third of the trio remember.

here is the comp my good peoples...

CRDS Presents: De La Soul,Remixes, Rare and Others

What's the name of this crew?...

In celebration of one of my all time favourite Hip Hop groups and De La Soul's more than twenty years in the rap game and their New Zealand tour (they have been here three times now, but I'm not going to the show, due to money issues) here is a 24 track compilation I did up first in 2006 to celebrate them touring NZ at the time
, I also did a tribute show on The Weds Nite Jam (which is around somewhere)

I was meant to put up this up years ago, but you know how time goes by and you forget things, but I will never forget De La, man the first time I heard 3 Feet High and Rising (damn where was I?) it blew my mind, an old friend Kory.H got the tape sent over from the US and told me that if I liked the Jungle Brothers-Straight Out The Jungle album, that I was going to love this album (thanks K)...he got the tape in... I think late 1988 and he did me a dub (recorded me a copy off another tape deck, yeah a tape deck remember those b?..high speed dubbing even ha ha)

I first listened in my headphones on my walkman (with Dynamic Bass Boost) and it was the quirky and clever samples, the dope beats and the funny way Posdnous aka Plug Won and Trugoy The Dove aka Plug Two were rhyming that got to me, but then it just became an album I loved listening to from start to finish and through later years, I would listen to it and notice things I hadn't noticed before, Prince Paul was/is indeed a genius producer and was a very important of De la Soul as a group.

De La Soul had won me over and became my favourite group alongside EPMD, NWA, Ultramagnetic MC's and Public Enemy so when it was announced in 1991, the year the great De La Soul Is Dead album was released, that they were coming down under, I was crazy excited, in all honesty the show wasn't as good as I thought it would be, but I still enjoyed it and hearing "Say No Go", "Eye Know", "The Magic Number" and "Potholes In My Lawn" live was pretty damn special.

You know what I enjoyed more though?
Watching P.A. Mase aka Plug Three doing an over two and a half hour set on the Wednesday Nite Jam (Props to Active 89 FM) with Mikey and Vicious from the MVC Posse, we moved the show to a Friday night, especially for the event, I got to meet and watch Mase destroy the turntables and hear play him play classic after classic (Brand Nubian, KMD, Doug E Fresh and many others).

I got to see Mase sink Elephant beers and order pizza up to the studio, I got to get Mase-O (what goes on?) a record he needed so he could do doubles from my bag and I am such an idiot that I didn't even have a camera then to document it all.
(I do have tapes of the show though)
.

Vee, held the fort down on the mic and presenting tip, because I was, really excited that Mase-O was there and nervous at all of the people in the studio and in the lounge area (a lot), so props to Mikey and Vee, that was an ill night, did we get lime milkshakes afterward?, I can't remember :P

I got to hang with Mase and laugh along with his crew as they held competitions to win dates with members of thier entourage (Jimmy Dean Sausages), one girl (yes you Narissa) rang up and embarrassed the shit out of me and I think she did actually meet a dude, I knew her quite well, and it was either Mase or one of his crew (Dove and Pos were at the hotel listening) that told me I was going beetroot flavour when she was on the phone LMAO

I did end up meeting Pos and Dove, up at an old Nightclub, Naked Angel (R.I.P.) and I think from memory I took my NME poster up to the club with me and go it signed by them all, now I was lucky enough to be the support DJ for them in 2006 and I took that poster with me and in a brief moment, showed Pos and Dave, they looked at me first like, "oh you want us to sign this for you" and I said "no, you already did back in 1991", and then I told them that "Mase and his crew came over and took over/Hi-jacked a radio station" and Pos and Dave looked at the signatures on the poster and their faces lit up with smiles.

The infamous NME poster

I love De La Soul, and my favourite albums are:

3 Feet High and Rising
De la Soul Is Dead
Buhloone Mind State
Stakes Is High

Thank you De La, for being a part of my life for so many years, your music has helped me through some hard times, your music has inspired me, your music has left me with great memories, your music has given me so many great moments, whether from playing it on the radio, out in clubs or in my headphones and on my stereo, your music is timeless, sincere and dope and I thank you very much for that.

For the record, I have been enjoying De La's project with Nike, Are You In? and you should check that out
