Godfather Don was one of the illest to ever do it, behind the boards and the mic and if you listen to this unreleased until this years incredible The Nineties Session album, you will hear Don taking stabs at fake MC's and a fucked up record industry, propelled with a great Nas sample and a haunting plucked strings sample that becomes as addictive as anything, I feel privileged that Traffic Entertainment got these jewels from Godfather Don...

I miss his sound and style more than you know...highly essential and so ill.

2-Gruf-Payday (2001)

I thought a great follow up to the Don joint would be from Winnpeg's Gruf produced by the sadly under rated mcenroe, just listen to that string sample,the drums, that vocal chat and the general vibe and feel of the track, the whole album is worth well checking and out and his 2nd album Hopeless (2005) was good, but not as good as this album.

Gruf more than hold his own this and drops conscious and thoughtful lyrics, something that is needed in a lot of today's Hip Hop more than ever.

I will admit that I think 2 Mex (Visionaries,Mind Clouders etc) does far too much and not all of it is good, but the Of Mexican Descent albums were a highlight in his career, I still find it a little hard to believe that the man behind the boards is none other than Evidence on this because while I like a lot of Ev's beats some of his material has been below average to be honest, anyway check those slow drums, those laid back and dope Spanish strings and the butter smooth flows of 2 Mex and the hard to pronounce Xolalolanxinxo, anyway the whole album is worth checking.

Finally!!!, I haven't got the B-Side "The Funk Wrecker" yet, but I love this all the same, it's because it's so sparse and all of the MC's (Bill, Tru, Taquan & Ra Loce) are dope that make this a winner.

Hard hitting Lonnie Liston smith drums, a vocal sample from (I think RUN DMC?), soulful bass and horns that could have been stolen out of Pete Rock's crates, there is sadly very little known about this crew, but I can tell you that they were from Maryland in Washington DC and step to me, you better step to the Middle East is not a chant about Dubai...lol.

Timeless 90's Hip Hop.

Here is Panchi (NYGZ) tearing up a dope track, that kicks off with a Redman sample, deep bass, fat drums, a scratch on the beat and a guitar loop and it's a Banger son!

Another awesome example of simple and sparse Hip Hop, a classic fat break, a fuzzy guitar sample (damn I know this), bass drops and an eq'd sample with the capable MC Trife riding the beat with ease, this a rare NYC indie and Trife apparently did an album with D-Mob titled Guntowns Finest, but I have never seen it, maybe you have?.

I have always been a fan of this crew and had been looking for this for mad years, I actually forgot that they were the first to sample that crazy keyboard/ barking dog sample that KMD used on the Nitty Gritty remix (It's a reeeeeemmmiixxx) (I think it's Cat Stevens, but I'm not sure), also some very familair keyboards are used on this as well (D-Nice, Public Enemy?), solid 90's Hip Hop.

A great slice of 90's Hip Hop, an addictive Cypress Hill sample from "Pigs", FAT Sly and The Family Stone drums and a keyboard sample, which from memory Donald D used to great effect,and an anti Police violence message delivered in a strong and commanding tone.

Blackstract later released the dope "Diary of a Mad MC" in 1995

I gave you the original version on Vol 2, now here is the remix, an ill horn, tight DJ cuts and a lovely laidback sample towards the end, this was the West at it's finest, some call them the Kali and others call them the Kali Tribe, but it's all gravy with seasoned potatoes B.

Listen to how ill those Melvin Bliss drums are (yes of course those ones) and the Bohannon sample and that sample, oh and the very rugged flows of this West Coast crew, I can't find a thing on this and I know it is indeed quite rare and I know Smoov from Vinyl Addicts has been lucky enough to get a copy, a super duper shout to Matt for the hook up, if you enjoy this joint then I will put up 'Rounda' on a later compilation.

It wouldn't surprise me if you already know this, but I noticed I had it on a burnt CD from years ago and remembered that I loved this track, kicking Sly and The Family Stone drums, a dope loop, bassline and an infamous BDP sample, the production actually reminds me of Da Beatminerz, but it's dope and the album was pretty good too.

Oh and speaking of the Da Beatminerz, here's a great remix from them from a record on the Max'n label with an MC named Lyrical Freestyle who has a great flow and reminds me a lot of Krimunul from The Jigmastas, but it's the laid back beat, bassline, "Buffalo Gals" sample (Heeeeeyyy yaaaa) and the well placed Afu Ra vocal sample, to be honest, I remember a friend years ago had this 12" and when he played it on air I always nodded my head and asked him if it was DJ Spinna....what an egg...haha.

We end on a great note with the enigma that is Smiley Oak, who was he you ask?, good question as all I know is that he was down with People Under The Stairs and appeared on Hardcore on their debut album The Next Step (1998).

I am lucky enough to own one of those American Men CD's and love everything about this track, Smile is in a crew called Cosmic Truckaz and I haven't heard them yet, if anyone has heard the album, can you let me what it is like please?.

Also, I really hope PUTS come out with some new material, I still listen to Stepfather and Hip Hop needs groups like them.

1-Bee Why-Good Die Young *Unreleased until 2007
from the Lost Tapes 2007

From the seriously dope and essential The Lost Tapes collections, I first got the Bee Why-The Boros 12" when it first got released in 1997, but I had no idea who Bee was and that it was Ayatollah behind the boards.

I always loved that record and it always got phone calls when I played it on radio and a number of "shit who was that?" questions when I played it out, get the Lost Tapes anyway you can because Bee Why was easily one of Queens finest and the hypnotic piano and slow drums that Gee The Nutty Professor supplied for Bee Why are as addictive as.......insert your addiction here.

The better news is next year there will be more unreleased Bee Why tracks, he is a Family Man these days, but he knows and appreciates that kids are checking for him.


2-Omnisence-Greatest MC In The World

What can I say about this?, an ill De La Soul sample from Ego Trippin, cool and amusing rhymes from Omni over a great jazz loop, deep bassline and lovely horns, I miss this type of sound so much.



3-The Jaz-It's Your Nature
from the Ya Don't Stop EP (1991)

Um nope not me, but he of Hawaiian Sophie fame and being Jay-Z's ex rhyming partner years ago and now known as Jaz-O, (DJ Premier has hooked up him a couple of nice beats over the years) this track sported a deep bassline, hard jazzy drums, snippets of some infamous Sly and The Family Stone drums, some ill organ touches and horns for the hook all produced by the great Large Professor.



4-Tribal Jam-Planet F'Yall
from the 9 2 5 12" (1994)


A small independent release that I was lucky enough to get recently as this one had been on my wishlist for more than a few years and man what a gem it is, freaking classic funk samples and a vocal hook I know but can't place right now.(I come ready to crush an adversary)

It doesn't even sound like it's from 1994 and the other track, 9 2 5 is a gem as well, this would have been featured on other blogs before, but if you haven't heard it then enjoy...good looking out Smoov



5-De'1 ft L.O.T.U.G & Sah-B-Da Underground Sound

I would like to dedicate this one to Dan Love (from the very dope www.fromdabricks.blogspot.com), produced by Marley Marl and using the same horns for Showbiz and AG's Fat Pockets classic, a Digital Underground sample, fat drums, deep bass and true nineties lyrics about wrecking the mic, how much flavour they have and bieng as bugged on the mic as they can.

I only ever had this dubbed of a mixtape in the 90's so you can understand I appreciate it more, De'1 only ever had the one 12" in 1993 but also appeared on the Lords of The Underground's Flow On and Scarface's True Homies in 1994 and then vanished.

6-Smooth Ice-Trunk of Funk (Remix)*

Smooth Ice lived up to his name, the dude was smooth and he sounds great over these Impeach drums and familiar James Brown samples (used by The 45 King, Das EFX and many others) as he rhymes about how fly his Cadillac is and that it's a hotel on wheels and that it's 4 wheels of luxury when he macks, it is completed with the Run DMC cut as the hook, search out his self titled debut album if you hadn't heard it.

7-Robbie B & DJ Jazz-Funk It Up
from the Comin Correct LP (1990)

The fist duo to sign to Ruffhouse Records was Philly legends Robbie B and DJ Jazz, Funk It Up is a great slice of 1990's Hip Hop, a basic drum loop,bubbling keyboards and a fat bassline, an old sample I know but can't think of right now,DJ Jazz cutting it up and of course Robbie's rhymes are all about being dope and hype, feeling the bass and being from Philly and although the album has some moments of cheese, it is worth checking out.



8-UMC's-Never Never Land (Remix)
from the Fruits of Nature LP (1991)

Who do you see kids?

Staten Island's Kool Kim (aka NYOIL) and Hass G will always be remembered for the jazzy, soulful and laid back funk of 1991's Fruits of Nature album, It is an album that has stood the test of time and sounds just as good as today.

There isn't a weak track on it and I enjoy the remix of Never Never Land slightly more than the original, the JB drums are in effect, as is the organ and the kids, I love the kids vocals on this.



9-Kero One-Check The Blueprints (Japan only 12" Remix)(2003)
from the Kero One Presents The Plug Label (2007)

It baffles me that this dope DJ/Producer and MC is not more known, the dude is so smooth with it and the way he loops up stuff and programs his drums or his use of breaks reminds me of the Sound Providers.

Kero rocks a a great Biz Markie vocal sample, a rolling piano loop, bass and drums and it's just well lovely...(how I let my mind float :D)

10-The B.U.M.S.-Wreck Your Ears (Can Do)
from the Life N Tyme LP (1995)

Ahhhhh the Brothas Under Madness, how could they do just the one album and leave us fans?, it just wasn't right, still we will always have their great debut album to listen to and this was one of the highlights for me.

Joe Quixx laced MC's E.Vocalist and D-Wize with such smooth drums and bass, classic James Brown and Rakim vocal samples and a hypnotic guitar loop= a recipe for perfection if you ask me.



11-Raw Fusion-Freaky Note (Freak Mix)
from the Freaky Note 12" (1994)

Man did Money-B have one of the illest and raspy voices in Hip Hop or what?, I have always felt he was under rated and wish he still made music, both Raw Fusion's albums were dope and this remix is a breezy and laidback cut bordering on porno soundtrack music (lol) and that's all it is about as Money B tells us what he does with the freaks, this remix is better than the original and the B-Side non LP track is dope as well.



12-3rd Degree-Better Days
from the Better Days 12" (1997) and Walkmen Rotation CD (1996)

Back in the late 90's, it felt that there was going to be a massive influx of quality Hip Hop coming out of Seattle via Conception Records.

For a few years there was and we got some dope records from Kutfather,Diamond Mercenaries and Eclipse and others, also Jake One produced a great deal of the best tracks as did the label head Mr Supreme did as well including this awesome track, consisting of a deep and dark bassline, fat drums and a sample that Grand Puba used on his 2000 album (I have forgotten who the original artist was sorry)...I love this and always have.



13-INI-Keep On
unreleased 1995?

Basically if you have not heard this... it's INI, it's Pete Rock looping up the Skull Snaps drums,a lovely muffled sample and a Big Daddy Kane vocal sample to great effect and a big THANKS to my boys Magnifik and Illest 22 from our forum for the hook up

14-Cheif Kamachi ft A.G.-The Meanin (They Don't Know)
from The Meanin' 12" (1999)

This is great and always got the heads nodding when I would play it out or calls on the radio show, it's just a dope track with cool De La Soul and Main Source vocal samples, The Bronx's AG is up first and then Philly's Kamachi and it just works and sound great thanks to Cas One's work behind the boards.

If I am being honest, I don't think Kamachi sounds right with the Army of The Pharaohs and think he needs a producer like Cas One again.



15-Brand Nubian-Scientists of Sound
from the Time Is Running Out LP (2007-unreleased until this year)

Ahhhh now this is the Brand Nubian we know and love, Grand Puba, Sadat X and Lord Jammar, spitting venom over a basic but ill low piano loop and drums put together by Grand Pu and the great Lord Finesse and is in my opinion the best cut of the Time Is Running Out album, I don't like Brand Nu when they do watered down poppy shit, it's just not them.

16-J Love and Large Professor-Cool
from the Rap Professionals 12" (1999)

Thanks to who hooked me up with this here at my blog, this is Large Pro being as smooth as can be over some slowed down drums and string and harp samples...hmmmmm mmmmmm...it is good, I have no idea what J-Love's part is in this because he isn't screaming or shouting over the track...lol, actually he is credited as producing it and Large Pro just rhymed over. it..but I don't know, I had the 12" once but it got it stolen.



17-Capital Tax-I Can't Believe It (Bleedat Mix)
from the I Can't Believe It 12" (1993)

They only had the one album The Swoll Package, but East Oakland's* Capital Tax made some great music in their short lived career, this has a Jazz Mix and a Funk Mix but I chose this mix as the best one, just listen to those horns, bass and drums and take a trip back....ahhhhhh.

*Why didn't the anon poster tell us where they were actually from instead of just saying they weren't from DC...how does that help anyone?

18-Barbershop MC's-Music, Money & Women

It's a shame that the Barbershop MC's (Barbershop Drevin, Chocolate Tye,Phil Da Agony,Barbershop SK,& The Barber Kiz and Chuck Hustle)
because they all sound dope over this flute laced laidback track and thier other tracks were worth hearing as well.

I'm not feeling the Strong Arm Steady material to be honest and I honestly believe that Phil Da Agony should do a whole album with E-Swift and then work on a full Barbershop MC's album, it just seems that both of these should have happened.




19-Kinetic Order-Swing High

Big Thanks to Roy Johnson for this, more Chicago illness, this track is just nuts and I listen to a lot, a rare Chicago underground gem and I am going to let the music speak for itself on this one.


20-Kali Tribe-Kalism
from the Kali Tribe-Kalism EP (1993)

I wish I could tell you more about this, but there is very little info on this crew, their sound was dope though and quite unique, sporting a nice Kool and The Gang loop, horns and a low pitched sample, with tight cuts of lyrics from Ced Gee of Ultramagnetic MC's for the hook.

I liked that these kids blended both West and East Coast styles and made it work the rest of the tracks on the EP are pretty solid as well.

Jaz Presents The JVC Tapedeck Fat Tape Volume 1

What's good all...

It's very clear that you kids really appreciate the fat tapes (yes I know they are not actually a mixtape, so let's go back to saying that they are fat tapes) and as I was going through some of my old junk to be thrown out, I found my old JVC tapedeck.

It was mad busted like Victoria Beckham (now that's busted),had buttons missing and was just dead, but when I saw it for the first time since... I think 1994/5 so many memories came back and I got a little teary eyed but then I thought...I know what I am going to call my fat tapes from now on.

The selection here is complied of some tracks that were rocked on my old JVC tapedeck (not the one pictured, but very close) and other joints I would have given play time too if CD's and Mp3's weren't around and it was still functional.

In case your wondering, the answer is YES...since I first heard LL rhyme "My JVC vibrates the concrete" and the JVC Force I always wanted one and got one for either a birthday or Christmas present, it was a single deck and had bass and treble controls and I tagged Masta Jaz on it ha ha... I was sorry to see it go...but what bugs me out, is the fact that today's kids and the next kids and the ones after that are going to look at cassette tapes as antiques.

I don't think these young i-podders know how lucky they are, no changing the tape over, no rewinding back the tape to hear your fave track again,no pulling the tape out and splicing it carefully and adding a tiny bit of sellotape to fix the problem and no having the tape spaz out and end up with you pulling the mangled tape out and sighing.

I was chatting with my Father about Reel to Reels and video tape and he said, I think today's generation will know about tapes but not vinyl, I told him no Dad you are wrong about that, vinyl is still around and there are a few online stores (but they are dying out) and specialist stores out there for the avid vinyl collector...but tapes?...they don't even sell them in stores anymore.

It was interesting conversation because imagine what the kids in 30 years will have...phew technology...damn

Saafir's younger brother King Saan and his rhyming partner Mr T .....flex that good ol' Bay Area style over J-Groove's chopped up "Impeach" drums, additional rolling drums and eerie synth stabs to great effect, if you know Saafir's material and Hobo Junction then you will dig this and while it's not as bugged production wise like some of the Hobo material it knocks and the bass will make your speakers quake...what more do you need?

A Massive Thank You to my friend Dave for the hook up, I forgot how dope this was, kicked off by an off the hook Raekwon sample (well it's actually Wu Tang but it's Rae's voice),a Biggie vocal sample, head pounding drums (I forget who the original artist was these drums were lifted from though sorry) and Ray Boogie and True Da Grynch wrecking shit on the m.i.c., The Evil Twinz came through Frankie Cutlass in 1993 when he produced Madstyle's Redrum, and Faces of Death on his The Frankie Cutlass show album (Hoody records).

Ray and True also appeared on his dope Boriquas On Da Set and the classic Cutlass joint Puerto Rico...hooooooo...oh Puerto Rico...

Boom, more 90's NYC underground madness,horns, pianos, kicking drums,and an eerie organ appearing in and out of the mix, made up this dope joint, what I love about this the most is you can tell that this was one hell of a recording session and each MC just rips it with that mid 90's rapid, fast style and in your face delivery.

Oh yeah, guess who else were on this track?, clue: the last joint...yup Ray & True join in the it's Da Henchmen!!! chants while Tank,Mental Flex and Big Jam have a fervent pass the mic session, the A-Side What You Gonna Do is fat as well.

I recently saw this on eBay for US $285...I am sure you can get it much cheaper than that....

K-Def samples an old school chant from the timeless Grandmaster Flash-Flash on The Beatbox (you know Gangstarr's You Know My Steez) for the hook, which was first flipped by the Jungle Brothers (you can figure out which track...:P) and here K drops a butter smooth bassline, classic 90's drums and yep, of course horns, while Shawn and Joe are truly indeed the icing on the cake...

Thanks K-Def I never thought I would hear this album and it hasn't left my headphones all week.

A solid mid 90's head nodder that was fairly sparse but very effective,UGO's flow was liquid and he makes you pay attention to his lines.

He was raised in the old DC Nigerian Embassy and an LA based recording artist when he dropped an album titled Earthquakin Afrikan, it was pretty solid and Cee Knowledge (ex Digable Planets) helped out on some of the beats as well as vocal appearances.

It's actually not intentional that I run a lot of Boston Hip Hop on my fat tapes, it's just that a lot of dope crews and MC's came out of Boston and although Joint Ventures aren't really remembered, this remix was in my opinion better than anything on their fairly good debut album, the hard hitting drums and that freaking familiar sample (my brain can't cope anymore, I think my mind library is shutting down...ha ha) give the track a new life. hype

I did up this comp up in the last few weeks and just saw Werner Von Wallenrod's dedication to this great track is a great read but I have to disagree that the Fredwreck remix is better Werner, I prefer the Joe Quixx remix, due to the ill laid back vibe and how much it sounds like Slum Village's Fall In Love.

Werner saved me from breaking down the artists so check his page and enjoy this remix.

Cool Calm Pete's first group,New York's unique Babbletron (Cool Calm Pete, DJ Pre & Jaymanila)
It's probably unlikely that Babbletron will release another album, but I can definitely see myself listening to Mechanical Royalty in 10 years, it was a very interesting and different album and it came as no surprize that Cool Calm Pete ended up as a Def Jux signee but what happened to Jaymanila?, he was ill too remember his line beatbox like a sadomasochistic lesbian, that should go into the greatest rhymes of all time book in my opinion.


Belle Pt 1 and 2 starts off with a breezy flamenco guitar samples,light drums and Cool Calm Pete on the mic, while Jay teams up with Pete on the harder twisted electronica second half, an interesting track and a taste of what was to come on Pete's dope solo LP, Lost (2005).

Out of underground Los Angeles, is/was Epidemic Massive a seven Man crew consisting of Boston's Crush-One, DocDaWhoo?, J.L.C, Brub,Minus, Sneek and Vega-One, I once had correspondence with Vega One and he was a very cool kid that was pleased that his music was getting played down in little old Wellington, New Zealand.

The album Rated E is well worth checking and the cut I chose Dedication is evident of this, an infectious guitar loop,nice drums,bass and well chosen De La Soul, Diamond D and Run DMC vocal samples work well, as do the MC's and the chemistry of the crew, which it's isn't surprising as E.M. had all been friends since 1992.

As far as I know they did just the one album and also appeared on Mums The Word's-People Keep Movin LP (2002), Crush has appeared on records with Sktizofreniks, Illin P and Rip Shop, Vega One did beats on Konfident's Kraftwork album in 2003

A Boston classic to these ears, every MC on this sounds so smooth on the laidback drums, swirling horns and piano and dusty Craig Mack vocal sample supplied by Bless One.

Ed, Shug and the late, great Scientifik were all repping Boston to the fullest on this one, I know a lot of people that preferred the DJ Premier produced Crush, but over the years I have listened to this one a lot more and it's just dope, so was Crush but this is just well, butter smooth.

NB: The recent DJ Premier produced Play It is really dope and I can't tell you how good it is to hear the Man working with breaks again.

Ahhhh, this was indeed a sign of things to expect from Encore and the very under rated producer The Architect (then known as G Luv), it doesn't get any smoother than this, a smooth and laid back groove, late night jazz horns and Encore weaves a wicked tale about drug dealers, My Colombian source made it plain, he says political clowns consider this trickled down for the fiscal sale.

I can never get enough of this, it's like one scene in a movie that you want to repeat time and time again.

YES you must know by now that this long lost gem has FINALLY been given it's due release, it was supposed to come out in 1994 and there even ads in old Rap Pages and The Source saying coming soon...but The Wascals got dropped and the album just sat on the master reels collecting dust...until 2007*

A double CD has been issued with instrumentals and remixes and the album is stupid fat, J-Swift was such a talented producer and always bought a certain vibe to his records...

Buckweed, St-Imey,A.L.-Phie & Spit-Anky, tear the mic to shreds on this joint, heavy drums, bass and horns, you can tell this is classic J Swift production because you expect Fatlip and the rest of the Pharcyde crew to pop up any second...you really should purchase this album.

NB: You may or may not know that Buckwheat has had moderate solo success as Buc Fifty.

Who knew that Buffalo had a great underground Hip Hop scene?, not me until I heard this in 2003 and thought wow this is dope, a lovely piano sets the tone alongside head nodding drums and somber bass while message driven lyrics make you pay attention and the Vera Lynn (I think) sample at the end is a nice lasting touch.

Members of 2 Buffalo underground Hip Hop groups,Pseudo Intellectuals and Catastrophic Mind teamed up in 2003 as the Cinemaddicts and released a good debut album, overflowing with intelligent rhymes, interesting production and great beats.

Playing God is one of the highlights from this album and someone tell me if they know if they did anything else please.

Yes, Dred Scott of the infamous Breakin Combs album had a track remixed by Marley Marl and listening to makes you think 2 things.

1-Is this actually a K-Def remix that Marley took credit for
2-Was this beat left over from the Intelligent Hoodlum-Saga of a Hoodlum sessions?

Because the beat and Dred's flow sounds very familiar, not that it's a bad thing it's just interesting, anyway the remix is good and worth hearing and my Man Riffs's cousin worked with Dred during the time of recording that album so I will find out the answers soon enough.

I have always enjoyed the Boston bred,D-Auguste's flow and records and it's a shame that he never did a full album, the same goes for Dialek (Paw Dukes,Ed OG,Laster, Concrete Clik & Krumb Snatcha) who was a great and under rated producer.

I guess with underground and independent music that's just the way it is, as not everyone gets to hear it and even though this joint is from 1999 it still stands up on its own today, sweeping cinematic strings, hard drums and honest and genuine rhymes from D-Auguste after he dedicates the joint to his late Father.

In my opinion this should have been the A-Side of this 12", the Maestro produced Saturday was okay but nothing great and the J Rawls produced Off The Top by Wordsworth was good but not Rawls or Words best work, that's why Liberation's- Fallen is the clear winner.

A laidback jazzed out track that gives the listener visions of dimmed lights in a small bar early in the morning, Liberation bless the mic with heartfelt rhymes about life and yes of course the female species over soothing horns, pianos and drums...if you haven't heard this you will remember it, and if you had heard it and not for a while enjoy it again.

I have always been a fan of Yah Supreme and it does surprise me he isn't larger, he has a great voice, is sincere, writes great rhymes and has dope production behind him.

"yes another tree grows in Brooklyn,your overlooking the only MC that you shouldn't"

This version contains all of what I mentioned above and has a beautiful vocal sample running through it, pianos and a little percussion from Parisian producer Jazz E Cut, seek this out and his earlier material and you won't be disappointed.

This is for me one of Blueprint's greatest ever production moments, I love how he has placed the slow guitar samples from the left to the right speaker, the stirring vocal from the favorite things sample during the end and the way Print and Illogic work so well together.

(NB: I'm not 100% sure but I think the sample is Sergio Mendes version of My Favorite Things)
