Heavy Rotation: 2 Really Dope LP's That Need Your Attention...

Word is born 2015 is almost out of the gate and I just wanted to do a quick post on 2 albums that are on heavy rotation as of late...

The first one is the superb debut album from Toronto, Canada Hip Hop duo, Still Waters and Best Kep aka Full Circle 

Infinite Edges is chock full of ill Jazz, Funk and Soul samples and head nodding classic breaks that actually sound fresh and the whole album sounds like a well produced lost 90's classic.

The second album is the dope and amusing Pimp themed album from Long Island's Smoovth (Tha Connection) and producer Giallo Point (Crate Divizion) which again is dripped in mid 90's sounding production and features Hus Kingpin, Rozewood, El Ay, Asia Jackson and Sean Rosati.

If I am being honest, I find a lot of today's Hip Hop often uninspired, stale and unoriginal...but tracks like this take me back to the many reasons why I have always loved Hip Hop, this is raw, pure grass roots Hip Hop from the birth place of Hip Hop right here and I can never get tired of those Lou Rawls drums.

Has Lo & Castle-Live Like You're Dead LP

Has-Lo and Castle link up again, trading rhymes and production on “Live Like You're Dead”. Born and bastardized from a grim quote, the album is the Philly and North Carolina MCs letting go of fear in its many forms, and laughing in the face of Death.

The theme is live energy. Whether from uncouth trade-offs on the Arcka produced "D.L.S.", insulting and lusting after Instagram thirst traps on "Yoga Pants", to wildin' out over trunk rattling bass in the album's closer "Look Out!", crafted by Has-Lo himself.

This album is creativity unfiltered. It's reaching for the nearest vice, and scheming on a hoodrat in yoga pants. It's raw loops and disrespectful bass. Underpaid work and visions of living rich. It's smiling when reminiscing on the past, and laughing because it feels good.

What's good CRDS fam?

I personally think there has been a resurgence in quality and hardcore underground Hip Hop in the past 5 or so years, but there just seems to be an abundance of albums that are a pleasure to listen to from beginning to end from this year alone and I personally feel that these 5 albums represent what true Hip Hop is all about today...so turn off the radio, stop watching what's "hot" on YouTube, grab some fat headphones and tune in and tune out kid.

Raw Collective-Wise Horizons EP

Raw Collective is a project initially started in Wellington with Jack Cromie (aka Dose Decepta) Raw Deezy (Evil Mule), & Pauly Lowe aka Professor Plum (Blvd. Nights). 

With their own recording studio, producers, beat makers, audio engineers and a string of musicians the ‘Raw Collective’s aim and passion is to create thoughtful and fresh hip-hop in the studio, backed up with an impressive full band live show.

Pauly Lowe (guitar/vocals) velvet vocals intertwined with Rory McAlister (raps/producer) hard hitting lyricism is a well fitted juxtaposition. Jock Jones (samples and keyboards) creates magic on the keys, Blain Fitzpatrick (bass) keeps that funky bass flowing while Jack Cromie (drums) keeps the tempo with dazzling virtuosity. Featuring a live 3 piece horn section lead by Ben Hunt (trumpet) with Sax and Trombone. 

To sum them up...Raw Collective is a unique blend of Hip Hop, Funk and Soul.

 
 
Influences include esteemed producers such as J Dilla, Madlib, RZA, with a touch of the familiar ’Wellington style’ funk and reggae artists.
After a great response at the Newtown Festival (Wellington, New Zealand) and regular airplay on Radio Active, Raw Collective is quickly gaining a big following in Wellington. 

Now hitting the road to promote the Wise Horizons EP, Raw Collective are looking forward to sharing their unique sound with the rest of New Zealand.  Each show will be filled with banging beats and funky melodies, punctuated with sharp conscious raps , draped in the darkest minor chords and layered with soothing vocals all wrapped up with some funky ass bass lines to get people dancing!

L'Orange-The Orchid Days

"His troubles are like bananas, they come in bunches"...

That dope and amusing quote comes from "Mind Vs Matter" from an album I have really enjoyed and gone back to a lot this year...the new album and follow up to the The Mad Writer (2012) from producer L'Orange titled The Orchid Days released on the ever consistent label Mello Music Group.

 


















Orchid Days is an album that encompasses some great chopped up '1950's jazz, old radio and soul samples, broken piano samples, swirling strings, smooth bass lines and head nodding beats, blended on his trusty MPC200XL & MPC2500, I honesty don't know who I would compare L'Orange's type of beat making with and in this day and age that is a really good thing.

The album features dope performances from guests like Blu, Homeboy Sandman, Billy Woods and Jeremiah Jae and Erica Lane, it's a cliche but this album is one of those albums that feels like watching a good movie that you know and love.

I have just compiled another volume of ill demo's from the East and the West Coasts with material from some established artists and some that we never heard from again, material that dates back from early to mid 90's, you can still get the first one here

Most of these tracks are ripped from old radio shows and dubs of dubs so it goes without saying that the quality on some tracks is not overly great...still this compilation sounded all grav in my headphones.

I'd like to send fat shouts to Roy Johnson, Nobs, Nes, Eons One from Ripped By Metal Explosions, Blockhead, Verge and the crew at Heavy Jewelz and everyone that has kindly supplied these demos over the years and of course all of the legendary DJ's that played these back in the day and all of the producers, MC's and artists that featured on these, thank you for the timeless music and your contributions to Hip Hop.
