Word is born! I will always hold 1992 as the greatest year in Hip Hop music after 1988, both years had such an abundance of consistency dope releases, genre defining music, smorgasbords of styles and of course '92 was a pinnacle year for legendary and iconic greats like EPMD and The Hit Squad, Gang Starr, Pete Rock and CL Smooth, D.I.T.C 
as well as a whole slew of other established artists and mad independent artists.

It's actually quite staggering that all of these tracks are or will reach their 25th year anniversary in 2017 and I personally think they all still sound really dope and are only a small handful of tracks that define the sound, creativity, soul and true character of 92.

Joint of The Week: The A.T.E.E.M.- "Get It On" (1992)

The A.T.E.E.M. was a short lived group that featured the legendary Chubb Rock's younger brother Rob Swinga, Hot Dog (who had a cameo on Black Sheep's -"Pass The 40" and FM (2 of Chubb's former dancers)

"Get It On" is pure 1992 Hip Hop music, a classic break, bugged out loop, a speaker rattling bassline, horns, a Chuck-D sample and braggadocio lyrics and numerous mentions to Women as "squaws", produced by The Trackmasterz (Poke and Red Hot Lover Tone) before they became well massive and in-demand producers and re-mixers, this cut appeared on their debut and only album A Hero Ain't Nuttin' But A Sandwich (1992)

Joint of The Week: All City Productions- "Bust Your Rhymes" (1992)

"Bust Your Rhymes" was released way back in the truly golden age of 1992 and I think a lot of heads slept on this and veered more towards the classic "Unsouled Mysterme" by Mysterme and DJ 20/20.



But "Bust Your Rhymes' was just as dope and featured a very impressive line up of Bay Area MC's going going for broke over a fat funk track peppered with Old School chants and samples provided by Joe Quixx you had the likes of Motion Man, Sway (yes that Sway), Mysterme, Evol (The B.U.M.S.) & Kool Kaz (Alski) from memory it was the debut appearances for Evol, Mysterme and Kool Kaz as Sway and King Tech released their debut 12" back in 1988 but were more likely known for the "Follow For Now" 12" released in 1990.

 I'd like to wish all of my readers a very Merry Christmas and I really hope that 2017 is a much better year for you all than the cesspit of garbage that was 2016.

Rough House Survivers-Straight From The Soul LP (1992) (Updated post and new links)

Ahhhh yes 1992 will always be fondly remembered as one of the illest years in rap music for myself personally, there was just an incredible abundance of raw talent and creativity, diversity, pure skills, personalities and singles and albums and a hell of a lot of "just drop the one album" crews and MC's who just vanished off the Hip Hop radar...

Rough House Survivers (note that there is no "O" in Survivers I was guilty of spelling it that way myself) were one of those crews...well what can I tell you about these kids...
NYC's DJ Swinn and MC's Dread One, Kev, and Roberto?...well not a great deal to be honest, but this album was packed thick with horns, fat drums and deep bass lines provided by Tony Dofat and 1 joint produced by Grand Puba plus guests such as CL Smooth, Sadat-X and Grand Puba.

Straight From The Soul was released on Relativity records in 1992 with "Check The Backpack" as the debut single, the legendary Pete Rock did a superb remix for the B-Side
track "Rough House" in 1993...





Straight From The Soul was chock full of that signature 90's sound and that is why we come back to it so many years later, it's a shame they only had the one album and it didn't get the push it should have, this was the case with a lot of artists in the 90's sadly.

RHS also dropped a 12" in 1997 titled "You Got It" and later re-released in 1998 with a dope remix from Knobody

Digging In The Tapes # 3: Katch Wreck (1992)

Ahhh 1992, definitely still one of my all time fave years and I made many tapes that year and I remember giving away a lot and making tapes for friends and that year I was doing the Wednesday Night Jam on Radio Active 89 FM playing out a lot (clubs, house parties etc) and I think I was also part of a loose (as in units lol) collective of top blokes and DJ's known as Ebony Beats, from memory it was myself, Pop Up, Apollo, Roddy (Don Luchito) and Jason Guy-Clement (Rainman)... also fat shouts to Amanda, G Tahu, Reane M, Joff, Mikki-D, Zoe, Chris, Liz, Kelly J, Tigs, Geordie and Apollo, M King, Dean, Cuffs, Hamiora, Simon, Adam and the old crew from Cuba Cuba, Ghrys and the many others I used to roll with back in those days, you know who you are ;)

I was working in a record store that year too and got that store it's first Rap section, which I was quite proud of and I got a lot of music that year (tons of promos, free albums etc), there was so much dope stuff out that year and I think this compilation from an old tape from 1992 is an indication of that, you will notice that I was a huge Hit Squad and DITC and fanatic and of everyone else on this tape.


An amusing story from this year was when I was recording an ad for a Trespass movie competition and I wanted to keep the recording and the only tape that was around was my Showbiz and AG-Soul Clap EP, so I recorded on that and the look on Jason's face said it all, I do remember saying ahhh I will get another copy it comes into the store on vinyl soon.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy this as much as I enjoyed compiling it and having some crazy good memories from all of the tracks...more compilations to come...

I felt that the write up for the first one pretty much covered the year in general and really in a year as dope as 92 was, the music spoke truly for itself.

Enjoy this trip down memory lane and if you were wondering, yes I did hear Foundation 7's-Compredator in 92 (maybe 93) on a mixtape but I had no idea who it was, I only found out last year and man am I glad I did, an incredible and timeless slice of pure Hip Hop and only this year was I lucky enough to find the other version of one of my all time fave joints...it's on there...much thanks and love to Travis,(cheers for the RHLT and A TEEM goodies) Dart & Dan and all of you other awesome family blog kids, keep the requests coming, trust me some of these may take a while but we will find them.
