Chris Read-Classic Material Edition # 2

The dope follow up to Classic Material mixed by the superb DJ Chris Read is now here, and this time he focuses on Golden Age Hip Hop from one of my fave years in rap music ever,1988.

Edition #2 of the monthly Classic Material series pays tribute to the hip hop of 1988, a year which many consider the 'golden year' of the late 80s. 

As samplers took over from drum machines as the producer's tool of choice, the James Brown drum sound ruled supreme and lyrical subject matter explored new territory.

With seminal (and at the time controversial) album releases from the likes of Public Enemy and NWA, this was a year that changed hip hop forever.

 This mix takes in classic and some lesser known cuts from singles and albums released in 1988.  The CD version includes 2 bonus mixes including "The Breaks of '88", an audio collage of the sample material used in the making of 88's best known hip hop cuts and is available to purchase on its own or as part of our T-Shirt box set from the Classic Material website.

Classic Album # 1: Poor Righteous Teachers-Holy Intellect 1990

What's good, good people?, I am waiting for some interview material, but I promise to have up interviews with 2 dope New Zealand Hip Hop crews, that don't sound like anyone else out there, they will be up in the next few weeks, in the mean, I thought it would be great idea to start an album of the week post and we set it off like the legendary Antonio Hardy did back in 1988...



As smooth as it floats...

I remember back in 1989, receiving a mix tape a friend did and it had PRT's"Time To Say Peace" on it, that tape got worn out crazy as I was mad on Soul II Soul (by the way their second album Vol II: A New Decade is still really great, have a listen if you haven't heard it in a while) and I was taken by the Soul II Soul samples and dope drums on the track and because I had heard a few other Tony-D projects before this single, I was dying to know if they had an album and I followed magazines like I.D.The Face, NME and more a few others and every issue I picked up had nothing but glowing reviews about it.



At the time I was working in an HMV music store and I asked every record rep what label it would be released through (it was released on the legendary Profile label) and it turned up in about a month's time, a very kind record rep (from Polygram...I think) handed me a tape of the album and as we had a tape deck up in the staff room, that was my lunchtime theme music, I was blown away, the ill and distinctive flows of the New Jersey trio of Wise Intelligent, Culture Freedom and Father Shaheed just worked really well and they dropped conscious and intelligent rhymes over dope and funky beats crafted by the late, great Tony Depula.

My favourite tracks were the very smooth "Strictly Ghetto" (check the bass line and the James Brown guitar sample on the hook), "Time To Say Peace" and of course the serious head nodder "Rock Dis Funky Joint", the very chill and positive "Shakilya", the title track and Tony D ripping up the bouncy "Can I Start This" under his Harvey Wallbanger alias.




Each track was pretty much Hip Hop perfection and it is astounding that this album has reached the 20 year mark, but if you haven't heard it, then please do yourself a favour and track this down and if you do know it then please slide it out of the collection and place it on your stereo promptly, in my honest opinion, Tony D's death was a massive loss to Hip Hop and they don't make albums like Holy Intellect anymore.

I am not sure if PRT are still together (I hope so) but Wise Intelligent has released three solo albums, with his first solo album in 1996, Killin You For Fun, 2007's The Talented Timothy Taylor (that featured dope beats from Oh No and others) and the collection of unreleased tracks recorded between 1999 and 2005, Blessed Be The Poor album and there has also been 2005's PRT-Rare and Unreleased collection.

R.I.P. Super Rocking Mr Magic aka Sir Juice

"A Woooooorld Premier"


Sadly another great and legendary DJ has passed on, the pioneering John Rivas aka Mr Magic passed away from a heart attack on the morning of October 2nd 2009, Magic first debuted on WBLS FM in 1982 with the first exclusive rap radio show to be aired on a major station, the show known as Rap Attack featured Marley Marl and Fly Ty.

During the 1980's, Magic had a rivalry with Kool DJ Red Alert and after dissing BDP's demo, the infamous "Bridge Wars" (BDP vs MC Shan/The Juice Crew rang out and...well I am sure you all know the rest.

Magic was referenced in a lot of songs and Whodini's "Magics Wand" was the first, but everyone from Nas, Notorious B.I.G., 2-Pac and Blaq Poet have mentioned his legend in their tracks.

Every Hip Hop DJ doing radio shows, owes that opportunity to Mr Magic, Magic was the one that opened the doors for rap being played on radio.

I remember getting dubbed tapes of Mr Magic Rap Attack shows from friends at school and I loved them, he always rocked the dopest shit, had a dope voice and cold rocked the party and from what I heard on those tapes, he always played material that I would scrawl down on a never ending wants list, the Rap Attack series were on high rotation back in the day too.

Today's kids might know the name from his Wildstyle Pirate radio station on Grand Theft Auto's: Vice City game, Mr Magic released 5 volumes of The Rap Attack series

"1989 the number another summer, (get down) sound of the funky drummer..."


Although 1988 is still the pinnacle year in Hip Hop for me, 1989 was also a stellar year, with lots of dope debut albums and new artists galore. It is hard to believe that the albums listed below will hit the released 20 years ago mark at various times in the year, in 1989, I was collecting rap tapes, in 5th form at High School, wearing hoodies underneath my school uniform and adidas or puma shoes (even though it wasn't allowed...lol) and in all honestly loving rap and having fun, getting down with my pretend rap radio station (KJAZ FM...ha ha) and loved listening to the Wednesday Nite Jam with the MVC Posse (big shout to Big Daddy Cam, Mikey and Vicious, Rhys-B and whoever else rocked the Wellington airwaves in 89.)

My favourite album from 1989 was De La's timeless 3 Feet High and Rising, but I probably played LL Cool J's Walking With A Panther more (fat shout to LL Short V aka AL) along with Unfinished Business, Road To The Riches, The Cactus Album, Done By The Forces Of Nature, Word Power, Original Stylin', Stezo's Crazy Noise (which had the ill "It's My Turn" on it, the first rap record to loop up the infamous Skull Snaps "It's A New Day" drums) Low Pro's We're In This Together, The DOC's No One Can Do It Better, King Sun's debut album XL (especially "Fat Tape" and"Snakes" and Schoolly D's great Am I Black Enough For Ya?...

I want to send a super duper shout out to Cool Tone from the sadly gone The Soul Mine the gem of a record store that was the dopest in the 80's and where I got so many great albums and singles from and speaking of singles, Public Enemy's timeless "Fight The Power" would have been the 1989 anthem.

-2 Live Crew's As Nasty As They Wanna Be album is banned in Flordia

-Gang Starr released their debut album, No More Mr Nice Guy

-The UK's Hip Hop Connection magazine was first published in 1989

-The UK's Black Radical MkII made some noise with his dope "Monsoon" single as did Blade with his "Lyrical Maniac" single and Silver Bullet with his Robocop sampling "20 Seconds To Comply"

-Overlord X dropped his debut album Weapon Is My Lyric

-Stereo MC's released their debut album, 33 45 78

-Tone Loc had a massive hit with "Wild Thing" and Young MC had a big hit with "Bust A Move"

-A lot of rap albums included Hip-House type joints and/or a love ballad (thanks LL...lol), Twin Hype were probably the best example of Hip-House done well with their "Do It To The Crowd" hit single.



-The 1989 DMC champion DJ was Cutmaster Swift (UK)



-In 1989 DMC and global sponsor Technics introduced the golden SL1200 Turntables, a unique and priceless prize given to the newly crowned DMC champion.

-The first New Zealand hip hop DJ Competition was held in Auckland in 1989, with DJ Ned Roy winning.

-Wellington Hip Hop outfit Noise In Effect were playing gigs at Wellington clubs and around the country

-Auckland radio station BFM compiled and released a rap compilation album titled AK-89-In Love With These Rhymes

-EPMD introduced the World to K-Solo on the "Knick Knack Patty Wack" track.

-Brand Nubian released their debut single "Brand Nubian"

-X-Clan released their debut single "Raise The Flag"

-Boo Ya Tribe released their debut single "R.A.I.D."

It's awesome that the Kurious demo's finally came out, they had always been on my wishlist since 94, but man the quality on the mp3's was pretty poor...so a huge big ups to Quo who did some cleaning up on them, what is even dope is that Kurious is working on a new album...but then again we have heard that one before lol.


Bee-Why-The Lost Tapes is...I think better than anything released this year, and the better news is Bee Why is going to release other rare joints

there are a bunch of tracks ayatollah did with him (one featuring Tragedy, another featuring B-1) from 95/96 that never came out. He is going to put those out along with the tracks from the lost tapes joint. through his own wolkpak imprint but he is attempting to get distribution for it.

Percee P's album is dope, but I would not be surprised if this gets slept on, this should have been released after his appearance on the Jaylib album if you ask me, I don't know why they took so long to get this album out to us and like my Man magnifik said why no Lord Finesse or DITC beats?.

Speaking of Madlib, has anyone got or heard Hood 2 No Good-Throw Em Up (1992) ?

DJ Ace and Daquan...

Man, I really wish I could give you a picture of what these guys look like or give any info really but this is what happens when dope records are rare...

I was first exposed to the crushing Give It Up way back in 1988 on a show that I ended up running years later (peace to Rhys-B, 2-Ski and the MVC Posse and Old School Weds Nite Jam crew)...I asked many people for years and years about this track and no one knew who they were or had even heard of the track.

It wasn't until 2004 when I placed messages on about 10 Hip Hop related forums when some very helpful kids from a forum (I forget which one sorry) told me what and who it was, I always said it was DJ Ace, as the MC Daquan mentioned him.

This is one of my favourite ever joints and the slowed down legendary 'Amen Brother'(The Winstons) break and the UFO strings still give me chills as does the way Daquan rhymed like no one else in 1988, the B-Side Hard To The Core was just as good with a beautiful Jackson 5 track being cut up on the hook (I might be mistaken but it certainly sounds like a young M.J.) and DJ Ace going to work on the tables on some spacey shit, the main loop being the Issac Hayes classic Ike's Mood...to think that this came out in 1987 is still incredible, kids were really creative back then...I miss those days.

This will be 20 Years old this year...can you believe that?
