I hope you all enjoyed Volume 1 as much as I enjoyed compiling it, I am pleased that I am educating some kids out there and I hope to do the same with Volume 2 of the Back To 1988 series.(15 tracks so they all fit one CD for the audio heads out there)

1-The 7A3-Coolin In Cali

This still hits hards with it's fat Sly and The Family Stone samples and Bretty B and Sean B rhyming about hot summer days and how fly they are, The 7A3 only had the one album, but it was dope and DJ Muggs (then known as Grandmixer Muggs was the DJ for the group), the two brothers were originally from Brooklyn, New York but moved to and recorded the Coolin In Cali album in California.

2-Mikey D & The LA Posse-Comin In The House

An amusing ode to the ladies with super dope production from the great, late Paul C, fat drums and ill horns fill up this track where Mikey D rhymes about his prowess with the ladies and has a lot of funny lines, I remember first hearing this on a taped radio show my friend Kory got and would play it over and over.

3-Cold Crush Brothers-Feel The Horns

Here was the Cold Crush Brothers (The Cold Crush...) proving they were still relevant with a straight up hardcore New York rap cut, dope horns and drum patterns, plus the rhymes were sharp and hard "we be sipping on Moet, while ya be sucking on a lemon and lime"...just the way they should have been, the Troopers album is dope.

4-Kool G Rap and DJ Polo-Butcher Shop

A dope Marley produced cut with his signature snares, drums and use of Funky Drummer, Kool G Rap doing what he does best on the rhyme tip and of course being "Excellent with the oral...contact" and DJ Polo destroying the turntables make this one of the best ever joints the three of them ever made, off the dope Colors soundtrack, which also had a non LP cut from The 7A3.

5-Bizzie Boyz-Hype Time

This joint is early Ski (then known as MC Will-Ski) production and contains some ill bacon (record crackle) and a classic James Brown loop, it's like hearing the beginnings of Original Flavor and The Future Sound, this is just a fun head nodding joint.

6-Butchy B-Go Magic

A pro Mr Magic joint by the elusive Butchy B, this cat took on KRS ONE on his "Beatin Down KRS" and I wish there was some info out there about them, because he was dope and produced his own records, along with his DJ, DJ ELC, also on this 12" was the funny Lasar Rock (Star Trek Rap) and the dope "Frontin At The Jam"

7-Kings of Swing-Stop Jockin James

One group had, had enough of all of the James Brown samples and declared it on this track, propelled by a sharp horn and familiar samples that I just can't place at the moment, Kings of Swing tell MC's that they need to be original and leave the James Brown samples alone because there are other funky beats out there...word

8-Captain G Whiz-All The Way Live

A kicking beat and a few stabs, drum roll and samples from Melvin Bliss's infamous "Substitution" track was all it took for G Whiz (from Freddy B & The Mic Masters) to go for his in an "Audio Digital" studio, as much as I love the rawness of this, I really do think it should have had a bassline running through it for added effect, but that's just my opinion.

This remix is kind of crazy and when you think about it, well ahead of it's time, there is all kind of splicing, editing and sampling going on, Brooklyn's MC Lyte has always been my favourite Female MC and she rips it on this, this remix sports the Three Dog Night sample, classic breaks and is well worth checking if you haven't heard it before.

10-Positive K-Step Up Front

This is a classic to me and you can hear Puba flowing over this just as easily as Pos K does, but Pos is the man on this one, amusing rhymes about his prowess on the mic and with the ladies over a funky Quincy Jones sample.

11-Eazy-E-Radio

Another classic, Eazy E is missed in Hip Hop, but he left a great legacy and some dope records, his first solo album and this joint being one of them, the production on this still holds up today and this was for me a highlight of the Eazy Duz It album.

Here you have solid NYC boombap production from DJ Chuck Chillout with dope cuts by Funkmaster Flex and able vocals from ???...I have no idea who the dude was, but he cold rocked the spot...haha.

Timeless old Marley Marl beats here and Trag sounding mad young, I have always enjoyed the cowbells in this and the deep, deep bass, but of course it was Tragedy that made this the dope joint that it is.

14-Busy Boy-Classical

A booming 808 and James Brown samples was all that was needed for Busy Boy to rip this, I think this is a timeless record and should be re-issued, if you haven't heard this before...you are in for a treat.

15-Raheem-Dance Floor

Using the same dope Eddie Kendricks sample that EPMD and Sid B Tonn used later on, this joint by former Geto Boys and Black Monks member was a favorite of mine back in the days and I only ever had it on a dubbed tape, check the disses to Eazy E and LL Cool J, and also the bad sampling haha...still a great track though.

What we are gonna do is go back...wayback into time...back to 1988

I never thought that as a young teenager back in High School with a large rap tape and record collection, I would be here on the big bad interwebs telling you how incredible this year was and why in my honest opinion that this was the pinnacle year for Hip Hop some 20 years later.

If I may share a memory, I had a good friend from Maryland, Washington who was at my school and in my class and Kory H (what's good B?..it has been a minute huh?) and I became close friends through what else?...Hip Hop, this dude had the illest collection and I got so much music and knowledge through him...well one boring school day he told me got some new tapes and that I was going to flip over what he had...we went around and looked for a tape recorder, found one and four of us locked ourselves in the school's film room, and on that day Kory (aka Kool Korz) reached into his bag and played four albums I have never forgotten, we got to hear Follow The Leader, Straight Out The Jungle,He's The DJ, I'm The Rapper and Smoke Some Kill and I think that is why those albums are still so important to me.

I also fondly remember doing tapes for him and other classmates and bugging out at his music collection, I am hoping he reads this because I haven't seen the dude since the late 80's and I owe a lot to him...thanks for letting me share that memory.

This post is also dedicated to the MVC Posse, Mikey, Vee and Cam this is for you chaps :D

Creativity and rhymes that meant something dominated rap in 1988, you had heavy, political and conscious groups like Public Enemy, Jungle Brothers, Boogie Down Productions and then you had groups like Ultramagnetic MC's, EPMD and Eric B & Rakim that stayed true to the essence of what the art form was all about and you also had the poppy and artists that just wanted to make you move like Kid N Play, JJ Fad,Finesse and Synquis etc.

MC meant Master of Ceremonies and Mic Control in 88 and even the gangster rap artists were actually saying things in their rhymes, gold chains were rocked when you earned the right to rock them, Slick Rick rocked truck jewels and so did the God Rakim.

Beatsmiths like Marley Marl, Prince Paul,Hurby Love Bug,Bomb Squad,Phil Most Chill,Baby Bam,Kool DJ Red Alert, the late great Paul C,Ced Gee,L.G. (Lawrence Goodman),Hitman Howie Tee,Curt Cazal, DJ Doc,King of Chill, DJ Mark The 45 King and others were taking chances and developing exciting new styles and sounds and moving away from just looped up drums or drum machine beats and a basic 4 bar sample.

James Brown loops,stabs, horns and drums were in full effect of course, even getting to the point where two artists said enough!, Hellrazor's "No More James" and the Kings of Swing's "Stop Jockin James", it didn't stop other artists digging out for fresh JB material though and in 1988, classic breaks were often the choice for MC's to flow over more than programmed drum beats.

1988 was all about identity and style as well, think EPMD and you think of fisherman hats, think of Stetsasonic and you think of Troop clothing, think of Rakim and you think of Dapper Dan, think of NWA and think of La Raiders and La Kings caps and giant clocks when you think of Public Enemy.

1988 was also the year that

NWA's-Straight Outta Compton LP goes Gold
D-Word aka Te Kupu released New Zealand's first ever rap single "Etu" with the Upper Hutt Posse
Making noise in the UK was 2 Tuff,Black Radical Mark II,D 2 The K, Demon Boyz, Einstein,Hijack, Faze One, Overlord X,Simon Harris, London Posse,Project X, Kash Da Masta, The Sindecut, Derek B, Korperayshun, MC Duke, MC Buzz B and the London Rhyme Syndicate plus more than a few others.
In Australia, Just Us from Sydney released "Combined Talent", the first Australian Hip Hop record.
The most sampled artist was James Brown
The first reggae/hip hop record known as Raggmuffin Hip Hop was recorded by Asher D & Daddy Freddy
The best ever posse rap cut "The Symphony" with Biz, Craig G, Kool G Rap and Masta Ace was recorded in 1988.

Copywrite-Read it and love it. Fuck those morons talkin shit about u "giving away free music". They'll complain no matter what u do. I've known camu longer than anyone in any crew he was ever in and I know he would love to be remembered for the obsession he put into his music and art. Much love fam. D.Lynch (Solid Scheme)-Thanks for the write up, you really did your homework. Thanks for taking me for a trip down memory lane. As for not seeing any photos of Solid Scheme your correct Chris and I were really on the low. We just made beats. Chris Passed away on March 9th 2001 of a suddden heart attack he was only 31That was my Dog! As for me I'm still making beats living in Los Angeles though originally from Brooklyn.
