Listener and ILLtripp aka Labklik

My friend Tim (what's good Tim?) and I have been discussing how much we enjoyed this group, Illtripp's and Listener's beats were often very original and raw,consisting of interesting lo-fi loops and dusty drum breaks and both himself and Listener had distinctive voices and rhymed about real life things,beats,rhymes and Jesus? yes they were Christian rap, but who cares about that they never preached about it or shoved it down your throat they just made great music.

Labkilk first formed in 1994 and released six albums and 2 best of albums, they disbanded in 2002 and the story goes that they made their albums on cassette sending each other beats and rhyming over each other beats and sending songs back and forth.

I first of heard of them in 2000, through the Sphere of Hip Hop page at mp3.com, I think Conquistador (ft 3NP) was the first track I heard and I was hooked and wanted more and I got it, through Labklik's mp3.com page they put up a ton of music between 2000 and 2001,taken from their albums, Five Elements (1995),Non-Dimenticar (1996), Shadow of Your Smile (1997), Low Quality Bus (1998) (the first album to be recorded on digital equipment) Perez Prado and Friends Part 2 (1999) and Artcore (2000) which was their last full album together.

ILLtrip recorded and released the Dialogue of the Downtrodden album as a digital download and a limited edition CD.

Listener and Illtripp are a part of the Deepspace 5 who have released 3 albums, The Night We Called It A Day (2002), Unique, Just Like Everyone Else (2005) and 2008's dope Bakesale and a dope one with the Beat Rabbi-Deepspace Soul last year.



Listener has released a dope solo album, 2003's Whispermoon which includes the truly beautiful Train Song (a song I want played at my funeral, along with Aesop Rock's Daylight) and many other great songs, he also now has a group known as The Listener Project and continues to release quality music, Illtripp on the other hand in 2006 stated that he has unfortunately given up making beats and rhyming, but hopefully he might go back to production, a big massive thanks to Tim B for this link and I hope you enjoy these Labklik songs if you have never heard them before.

Tame One is back...

Tame One, the former Artifacts member and one half of the Leak Brothers (the other was Cage) has appeared on dozens of other artists records, and worked with many producers that ranged from the late, great Camu Tao to J-Zone,Geo, RJD2, DJ MIghty Mi, Dusted Dons and many others for his solo albums and mixtapes, he has released a number of 12"s since the Artifacts went their separate ways.

Tame One will be dropping a brand new prelude album titled Da Ol Jersey Bastard (an ode to the late great O.D.B.) with guests Sean Price and Del The Funkee Homosapien, his upcoming digital download only album will be titled Acid Tab Vocab and both albums are being released through

R.I.P Camu Tao

Hip Hop has lost yet another talented solider and this time again it is sadly another trooper from Columbus, Ohio, 31 year old producer and MC, Tero Camu Tao Smith lost his life due to a long battle with lung cancer, Camu was first introduced to the World through MHZ (RJD2, Copywrite,Jakki Da Motamouth and Tage Proto) first releasing the "World Premier"/"Camu" 12" in 1998 and followed that up with "Rocket Science", both singles being released on Bobbito Garcia's great Fondle 'Em label.



MHZ, never had an official album, but released Table Scraps in 2001 which was a collection of their singles, some freestyles and other material, after the MHZ material, Camu worked on a vast number of projects as both as an MC and producer, he formed Central Service with EL-P, SA Smash with Metro who released the zany but dope Smashy Trashy LP and The Night Hawks with Cage, who released the one off Nighthawks LP, and he was also a part of the mighty Weathermen crew on the Def Jux label, Camu had a unique style and was indeed one of a kind, he is probably best known for the late, great DJ Przm's "Hold The Floor" classic, but Camu produced and did a lot while he was here and worked with many artists, ranging from Vakill,Evidence to Prefuse 73.


SA Smash

Camu seemed to be a name synonymous with either Def Jux or Eastern Conference records, appearing on and producing records for both labels, Camu Tao's music in it's essence was interesting, hardcore and dope and I hope you enjoy this compilation I put together I went through a lot of material and wanted the compilation to be something you smash speakers with or just rock in your headphones.. the underground has lost yet another great, it's just not fair.

Rest in eternal peace Camu and thank you for the music.

What's good CRDS readers and fans?

I have had a lot of issues to deal with as of late and I know I the posts and compilations haven't been coming thick and fast like they used used to, but I am working on it I promise, I would like to say thanks for the comments and the props on the Ol Dirty comp, that was mad appreciated.

O.D.B.Return To The Essence

Ahhh The Wu, the mighty, mighty Wu Tang Clan, I could write for hours on them, but this post is dedicated to the great and much missed Ol Dirty Bastard, it was a compilation I did up as soon as I heard of his passing in 2004, it is a compilation that showcases the amusing,paranoid,delusional, inventive, clever and downright insane and infectious style we all became accustomed to.

I remember the first time I heard O.D.B., it was, of course on Wu's classic Protect Ya Neck and I thought he was defintely the most bugged of the clan (First things first man you're fuckin with the worst) and loved his work on Enter The 36 Chambers and his timeless and very dope Return To The 36 Chambers album, Ol Dirty's style really was unique and he was what being an underground MC was all about, he could adapt to all types of beats and could flip any style and he had fans and mad love from all coasts and all around the World,I would say that my favourite joint from the late, great Unique Ason was Harlem World his flow was manic and incredible.

It's sad how Russell went out, but we all knew that he loved getting high and had his fair share of issues and problems and fathered something like 14 kids, so it was only a matter of time before something happened sadly, I miss Ol Dirty and wonder how different 8 Diagrams might have been if he was still around, the Wu haven't really been the same since ODB was taken from us and he was a vital part of the clan in my eyes.

Icons-What Legends Are Made Of LP

I have had a few requests for this album and I thought it would be a good idea to post it here at the cold rock da spot blog, what can I say?, the album is dope, full of great beats, interesting production and superb (and sometimes quick fire) rhyming from 2 ill MC's Frosty da Know-Matic and Ech-U-Sketch as well as 2 fine DJ's,DJ HOP and DJ Demon on the cuts, this San Diego crew more than held it down back in 1998.

Take my word for it, this album was meant to be tracked down 10 years later and is a very fine example of underground hip hop done right.

They had another single in 2001 "Snapshots" (which I have somewhere on my masses of CD's) and also released another album Capture The Flag in 2001 (thanks to Matt for that info) and before that a 12" in 1999 then (as far as I know) they vanished, I am hoping that the members of this dope crew, fall up on this post and let me know about an unreleased album or just appreciate being recognized because they deserve it.

CRDS Presents Da Beatminerz-Dah Remixes

New York's Da Beatminerz have laced us with some of the greatest, grittiest and rawest beats in Hip Hop history, the beats often consisted of thumping breaks and deep filtered basslines, horns and clever sampling.



Da Beatminerz (Mr. Walt, Evil Dee,Chocolate Tye, Rich Blak, Baby Paul) first formed in 1990,with Ike Lee and Freedom first using the name to remix Ultramagnetic MC's Poppa Large 12" in 1992 then brothers Mr. Walt and DJ Evil Dee marked their production debut on Black Moon's 'Who Got The Props' 12" and then went onto produce one of the greatest albums of 1993 and all time, Black Moon's superb debut album Enta Da Stage.



After they released a few remixes from the album, Da Beatminerz were hard at work on Smif N Wesson's Dah Shinin album releasing the finished album in 1995, this album was dope, but not as dope as Enta Da Stage, Tek and Steele had an awesome chemistry on the mic device that was similar to EPMD.



next up was Ruck (aka Sean Price) and Rock aka Heltah Skeltah with their dope debut album, Nocturnal and just like Tek and Steele, Ruck and Rock had a great chemistry together as did the duo when they formed with OGC (Originoo Gunn Clappaz) in 1995 as The Fab 5, releasing the ill 'Blah' 12"



the next in the BCC (Boot Camp Clik) cannon was OGC with their solid debut, Da Storm, which also had beats from E-Swift (The Liks) and Lord Jamar (Brand Nubian)



Between 1994 and 2000, Da Beatminerz produced and remixed records for Shades Of Brooklyn,Finsta, Mic Geronimo, Royal Flush,Dilated Peoples,The Roots, House Of Pain, A+,D'Angelo,Pharcyde, Afu-Ra, Bahamadia,Heather B, De La Soul,Jungle Brothers,DJ Krush,Eightball and MJG,MOP,OC, Terror Fabulous and many others, they have also released 2 albums, Brace 4 Impack (2001) and Fully Loaded With Statik in 2005 which are both filled with guest MC's and artists catching wreck over Da Beatminerz signature basslines and muddy beats.

There has also been 3 BCC albums, For The People (1997), The Chosen Few (2002) and The Last Stand (2006) as well as numerous mixtapes from Sean Price and others.
